Mladenovic Banishes Baptiste in Opener

We had anticipated a straight-set win for Mladenovic in her first round match against Hailey Baptiste and while that’s exactly how it turned out, the Frenchwoman had a struggle on her hands in the opening set.

Mladenovic got an early break of serve in the first set to take a 2-0 lead only to be broken back by Baptiste who levelled things off at 2-2. Things went on serve for a couple of games before the Frenchwoman broke again to go 5-3 up but was broken right back.

Fortunately for Mladenovic, she broke again and then served out the set in the 12th game to go 1-0 up.

The second set looked to be headed in a similar manner as the first when Mladenovic and Baptiste exchanged breaks in the first two games but the world number 44 regained the momentum by going 4-1 up with two successive breaks of serve. Baptiste held once before crashing out 7-5, 6-2.

Mladenovic will now look to better her US Open 2019 showing in which she had crashed out in the second round. Interestingly, Mladenovic is yet to win two matches in a row in the main draw of a WTA tournament this year.

Gracheva Wins Maiden Main Draw Match of the Season

It was not so long ago that the Russian 102nd player won the first ever main draw match of her career. Gracheva had made it to the main draw of the Washington Open last year and then defeated Anna Blinkova to make it to the second round.

This year, it hasn’t been too good for Gracheva in terms of main draw wins but her form at the ITF level last season would have kept giving her the confidence – and ranking points to go up the ladder. She narrowly missed qualification at the Australian Open earlier this season but that also started a string of five successive defeats in the lead-up to the tour suspension.

Playing in European Pro Series exhibition competition, Gracheva won five of her six matches on the hard courts, but returning back to the WTA tour, it was all back to square for her. Defeats in the Palermo and Cincinnati Open qualifier, and a straight-loss at the first round of the Prague Open left her without too much confidence coming into this tournament, but a straight-set win over Paula Badosa should help her feel a lot better.

Kristina Mladenovic v Varvara Gracheva Prediction & Tip

This seems like it could go on to become another of the straightforward wins Mladenovic, a straight-set one like the first round. That said, she would prefer improving on her serve which was broken multiple times in round one.

Tip: Mladenovic to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
