Novak Djokovic v Kyle Edmund Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between Djokovic and the 44th-ranked Edmund. The world number one has won five of them, with Edmund’s only win having come on clay at the Madrid Masters in 2018. They have played once before at the US Open too, in 2016 where Djokovic defeated Edmund in straight sets in the fourth round.

Djokovic Makes Short Work of Dzumhur

The world number one Serb did not waste too many breaths on getting past Damir Dzumhur in his opener, defeating him 6-1, 6-4, 6-1, a result on the lines of what we had thought would happen if Djokovic was fit. And that win means Djokovic has now improved to 24 wins this season without a defeat to his name.

One of the factors to watch out was how quickly Djokovic recovered from his Western & Southern Open semifinals and final on Friday and Saturday. And those watching had their answer – it hadn’t taken the supremely fit Djokovic too much time.

What makes Djokovic even tougher to beat is the fact all his wins have come on the same surface, hard courts. Wins at the ATP Cup, Australian Open and ATP Dubai were followed by the Cincinnati Open last week and in the absence of the two of the members of the Big Three, the question everyone seems to be asking is – can anyone stop Djokovic in his tracks?

Can Kyle Edmund do that? Over a best-of-five match, very improbable.

Edmund Improves on his 2018, 2019 US Open Showing

For two years in a row, Edmund had been losing in the first round at the US Open. In fact the last time he won two successive matches at a Grand Slam was in the 2018 Wimbledon, seven majors ago.

And when he fell behind to Alexander Bublik in the first set, eventually losing it 6-2, the fear was Edmund was mentally struggling yet again at the big stage. He proved otherwise.

Fighting back to win the next two sets in close fashion Edmund finally took full control of the match in the fourth set as he romped ahead to bagel his opponent, winning 2-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-0 to move into the second round.

Edmund will now look to take whatever positives he can into this second round match against Djokovic, and one of them is his title win in New York not so long ago. It came on the indoor courts of the New York Open and doubled his ATP titles tally and Edmund will hope he can get into that kind of form.

That still might not be enough.
