The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 29-year old Spaniard, and the American, three years his junior.

Carreno-Busta Survives Opening Scare

Carreno-Busta, the number 20 seed, was given a big scare by Yasutaka Uchiyama of Japan in the first round, and had to come from behind to beat the world number 86.

After Carreno-Busta had closed out the first set, Uchiyama hit back to take the next two. However, then the Spaniard rallied, and a single break of serve in each of the next two sets was enough to give him victory.

He will now be hoping for another good run in the tournament, where he got as far as the semi-finals in 2017, before losing to the South African Kevin Anderson, in four sets. That same year, he was a quarter-finalist in Paris, and he has been as far as the fourth-round in Melbourne.

He was a beaten finalist in the doubles at the US Open in 2016, and, last week in the Cincinnati Open, he won the Masters’ double title with his partner Alex de Minaur.

Krueger Gets His First Grand Slam Win

Krueger, the world number 198 turned pro in 2012, and was given a wildcard for the US Open that same year, although he subsequently lost in the first-round. However, since then, his only other experience of Grand Slams was in Melbourne this year, when again he made it through to the first round.

However, he is now in completely new territory for him after one of the best wins of his professional career on Monday, beating Pedro Sousa of Portugal, a man ranked 88 places higher than him currently.

It was Sousa who took the early lead, with a single break of serve enough to give him the first set.  But two breaks of serve were enough to allow Kroeger to level the match in the second.

The third saw both players make plenty of errors, and there were no fewer than five breaks, Krueger edging ahead because he was able to hold his serve one more time than the Portuguese.  One more break in the fourth earned him his maiden Grand Slam victory.

The 26-year old spends most of his time on the Challenger tour, where he was one four titles, most recently in Dallas last year.

He has very little experience of the senior tour, and the match with Carreno-Busta will be the biggest he has ever faced. He goes into the match knowing he has nothing to lose.

Pablo Carreno-Busta v Mitchell Krueger Prediction & Tip

Carreno-Busta will begin this match as the overwhelming favourite to beat a man ranked nearly 170 places below him in the world.
