This will be the first the Spaniard world number 16 Muguruza will be facing off with Pironkova who entered this tournament on a protected ranking.

Muguruza Makes Short Work of Hibino

After Muguruza withdrew from the Cincinnati Open last week, there were doubts over her participating in the US Open too as she grappled with an ankle injury. The Spaniard had made it clear she wanted to play in this season’s second major but the big question was if she was match-fit enough – having not lifted her racquet for a competitive match since February 2020.

And while Muguruza did look sluggish at the start and ended the match with more unforced errors than winners (23 to 22), she came through in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

She started off slowly, getting broken on her very first service game as Hibino raced off to a shock 3-0 lead. Muguruza, however, came back from there, regaining her serve with great difficulty in the next game before overturning a 4-1 scoreline in her opponent’s favour to 6-4 win in the first set.

There was no looking back for the Spaniard from there on, as she broke Hibino early in the second set and retained that advantage throughout the set to clinch the match.

Muguruza, who was the Australian Open finalist earlier this year, now faces an unknown challenge in round two.

Pironkova Returns Back to Tennis with a Win

Continuing on the lines of women tennis players returning to the sport after the birth of their kids, Pironkova played her first competitive match since the 2017 Wimbledon earlier at the US Open. Having entered the tournament on a protected ranking, Pironkova displayed she had lost none of her old talented self as she cruised past Luidmila Samsonova.

Pironkova won 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of a competition she had last played in 2016 and made the second round.

Known for her aggressive play on quicker courts, Pironkova is more of a grass court specialist – a rare breed in tennis these days – having made it to two of her three Grand Slam quarterfinals at Wimbledon. She had gone on to enter the semifinal in the 2010 edition of the tournament.

In her first innings as a tennis player, Pironkova had risen as high as 31st in the world but despite that, had beaten top 10 players on 12 separate occasions. Can she now upset the Muguruza apple-cart?

Muguruza v Pironkova Prediction & Tip

It’s one thing beating Samsonova and quite another to get past a fit Muguruza. I use the word fit deliberately because if she is at her best, Muguruza should have no trouble getting past Pironkova here.

Tip: Muguruza to win in straight sets: 3/4 (bet365)
