Johanna Konta v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between Konta and Cirstea and on both occasions the Brit has triumphed in straight sets. Both matches came in 2017, including one at the Fed Cup and the other at Eastbourne.

That is what Johanna Konta’s record read over the first five competitions she participated in this season with the only exception being the Monterrey Open where she managed a semifinal appearance. Even on her return to the sport from the pandemic break, Konta lost to Marie Bouzkova in the first round at the Lexington Open.
The sparkle looked to have gone missing even during the break. Participating in the Battle of the Brits, she lost to Jodie Burrage and barely scraped through to a win against Katie Boulter.
Which is why when she came up against fellow countrywoman Heather Watson in her opener, one knew she was going to be tested. And she was, at least during the tie-breaker when she fell 6-3 behind. Saving three set-points there, Konta saved another set-point at 7-6 to finally win it 9-7.
Once the adrenaline had begun to flow, the confidence returned and Konta went on to clinch the second set 6-1 and move to the second round of a Grand Slam where she was a quarterfinalist last season.

Cirstea Stuns McHale
After the kind of season Cirstea has had, she went into her opening round match against Christina McHale as the second favourite. That didn’t play a part though as she got an early break and while she was broken back, Cirstea wrapped it up on McHale’s serve in the 10th game of the set.
The second set was a lot closer as Cirstea won two breaks of serve, only to be broken right back by McHale. At 6-5 on the American’s serve, however, Cirstea got her first match-point and converted it to make it to the second round.
Interestingly, Cirstea’s only other main draw win this season had come in the first round of the Australian Open. In the six other tournaments she has played this season, Cirstea has either lost in the first round (4 times) or in the qualifiers (twice).
Konta v Cirstea Prediction & Tip
With her confidence from that win over Watson, Konta will be a heavy favourite to go through against Cirstea. It just could be a close encounter even if it doesn’t go into the third set.
