De Minaur Won the Cincinnati Open

De Minaur burst on to the scene as a teenager in 2018, when he reached two finals, in Sydney and Washington.

Although he lost both of those, he more than made-up for that last year, when he won three ATP titles – in Sydney. Atlanta, and Zhuhai. He was also a beaten final in the Swiss International, where he was defeated by Roger Federer, and was runner-up in the season-ending Next Gen ATP finals in Milan.

Last week, he won his first senior ATP doubles title, clinching victory in the Cincinnati Masters with his partner, Pablo Carreno-Busta.

In terms of Grand Slams, his previous best run came here in New York, when he reached the fourth-round, beating Kei Nishikori on the way, his first ever win over a top-ten ranked player. He was beaten, though, by Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets.

He advanced to the second round this time with a comfortable win over Andrej Martin of Slovenia, the world 98.

The first set was won with a single break of serve, and although both men dropped their serve in the second, de Minaur was the more consistent player, and won that as well. Another break of serve in the 12th game of the third set was enough to seal the win.

Gasquet Overcame Veteran Karlovic

Gasquet is into the second round of the US Open for the eleventh time in his career. His best performance in New York came in 2013 when he reached the semi-finals before he was beaten by Rafael Nadal in straight sets. Two years later, he got to the quarter-finals before succumbing to Roger Federer.

He progressed this time at the expense of Ivo Karlovic, who is now the Grand Old Man of the ATP tour at the age of 41.

The first set was tight, with neither man giving ground, until the tie-break when Gasquet capitalised on a couple of errors by his opponent to edge ahead. The second set also went to a tie-break, after both men had dropped their serves in the course of it, but again Gasquet took the honours.

The third though was more one-sided as Karlovic began to tire, and the Frenchman was able to close out the match relatively easily.

In that match though, he had the advantage of being the younger player. The boot will be on the other foot against de Minaur.

Alex de Minaur v Richard Gasquet Prediction & Tip

Although they have never met before, de Minaur is tipped to challenge for the major titles at the top of the game in the future, whilst Gasquet’s best days are probably behind him. That makes the Australian the favourite to win this match.

Tip: De Minaur to win in four sets: 9/2 (bet365)
