Sloane Stephens v Olga Govortsova Head to Head

There have been two previous occasions when Stephens and Govortsova have faced off in competitive matches on the WTA circuit and on both occasions Stephens has won. The first came in the second round of the Miami Open where Stephens won in three sets before she routed Govortsova in straight sets in Acapulco.

Stephens Doubles Her Win Tally for the Year

First round defeats at Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Acapulco were followed by the season’s first ever match win at Monterrey for Stephens. And she then lost the very next match again.

It’s with that 1-4 win-loss record she went into the break, before participating in the Credit Bank One International and the World TeamTennis exhibition competitions. Things didn’t get any better for Stephens after the return of tennis when she was bundled out in straight sets at both, the Lexington Open and Cincinnati Open to spell a kind of rut one would have thought difficult for a former Grand Slam winner.

Fortunately for Stephens, she was able to reverse some of that poor form with a straight-set win over Mihaela Buzarnescu, ranked 122nd in the world. And even in that encounter there were issues; she was broken twice and served up more unforced errors than winners (15 and 13 respectively).

Can she take the positives out of the rare opening round win and improve on the other aspects of her game going into the second?

Govortsova’s Had a Better Season

She might be ranked 130th in the world, Govortsova has had a better season than Stephens so far. While she failed to qualify for the Australian Open, Govortsova made it to the semifinal of an ITF event and followed it up by winning another such tournament.

Taking that confidence into the Monterrey Open, her last competition before the pandemic break, the Belarusian came through the qualifiers before defeating Caroline Dolehide in the opener. Her campaign was ended by Elina Svitolina in the second.

Since returning to tennis Govortsova has played in the Lexington Open, where yet again, she had to go through the qualifying process to make it to the main draw. In the first round she defeated Betthanie Mattek-Sands before falling to the in-form Ons Jabeur in the second.

And here at the US Open, she kick-started her campaign with a 6-1, 6-2 drubbing of USA’s Asia Muhammad. Can she now send a second American packing?

Stephens v Govortsova Prediction & Tip

This could be a close one to call and while Stephens is 8/13 to win it, we aren’t convinced there’s much to choose between the two players. Will go with the total sets market here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
