Iga Swiatek v Sachia Vickery Head to Head

The only previous time Swiatek and Vickery have faced off in a match before this came at the Miami Open qualifiers last year. Vickery had won that encounter in straight sets.

Swiatek Continues to Impress

The 19-year-old Swiatek hasn’t played in too many tournaments this year but during the pandemic break she featured in a couple of them on clay and won nine of the 10 matches played. And if one thought the lack of hard court tennis leading up to her first post-pandemic tournament at the Cincinnati Open would be a concern, that’s how it turned out.

A direct entry into the first round, Swiatek went down in straight sets to Christina McHale even as she tried to shrug off the rustiness from all those months of no tennis.

Which is why when she was drawn to face Veronika Kudermetova, it did not seem as straightforward as it eventually turned out for Swiatek. The Pole broke her opponent five times in the match, and completed a 6-3, 6-3 rout in 92 minutes to slide into round two.

Having made it to the fourth round at the Australian Open earlier this year and the same stage at the French Open last season, she will now be gunning to do the same at the US Open too. First things first though, a third round appearance and a match-up against the winner of the Sabalenka-Azarenka encounter await the teenager.

Vickery Sends out Townsend

Wildcard entrant Vickery needed just two sets to overcome Taylor Townsend in the first round, winning 6-2, 6-4 to seal her place for this match against Swiatek. In a game predominantly played on the baseline, it took her 81 minutes to get off court, as Vickery broke her opponent four times.

At the same time, the stakes will get that much higher now for a player who hadn’t been a part of a Grand Slam main draw since January 2019 and never made the third round ever.

Vickery will need to dig deep, and bring out all her experience including one which saw her beat Garbine Muguruza in the 2018 Indian Wells Open when she was herself ranked 100th.

Swiatek v Vickery Prediction & Tip

Markets reckon this will be a one-sided one, with Swiatek starting off at 1/5 to win this. Those are very short odds for us, with a straight-set win for the Pole at 4/7 sounding a lot better.

Tip: Swiatek to win in straight sets: 4/7 (bet365)
