Dominic Thiem v Marin Cilic : Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between the two players. Thiem leads the head-to-head 2-0, with wins on the hard courts of Brisbane in 2016 in a decider, followed by a straight sets win last year at the Rogers’ Cup Masters 1000 win in Canada.

Second Seed Thiem Aiming For a Deep Run

Dominic Thiem was one of the pre-tournament favorites coming into the US Open, after world number one and 17-time Grand Slam winner, Novak Djokovic. Currently ranked number three in the world, Thiem is the second seed in the absence of Rafael Nadal.

Having turned 27 yesterday, Thiem has had a career full of promise, and good results, but as a result of the presence of the Big Three, he does not quite have the big tournaments under his belt the way he should. With multiple wins against each of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, Thiem has done well to have reached three Grand Slam finals, won the Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000, been a finalist at other Masters 1000s, and the 2019 ATP Year End Finals and won several other ATP tournaments.

However, the time is no more ideal than now for him to capture a major title and separate himself from the other non Big-Three, at the moment.

After missing out nearly against Djokovic at the Australian Open final leading two sets to one, Thiem did not have the best of Februarys before the season was suspended for the pandemic. The Austrian returned to the tour, at the Western & Southern Open, with a shock opening round loss to Filip Krajinovic.

Thiem was challenged by young Spaniard Jaume Munar, in the opener, before Munar retired with an injury. The Austrian was, however, clinical in his second round win against Indian Sumit Nagal with a convincing straight sets win, and will look to continue the form going further into the tournament.

2014 US Open Winner Hoping For Resurgence

Marin Cilic spent most of the last decade ranked within the top ten in the world. He is the 2014 US Open champion, and a finalist at the 2017 Wimbledon and 2018 Australian Open respectively. The big serving Croat has been ranked as high as world number three and typically a familiar face in the second week of any major.

2019 was a dismal year for Cilic, with injuries and disappointing form and dropping out of the top 40 in the ATP rankings. The Croat started the year well, losing in the fourth round of the Australian Open to Milos Raonic, but showing glimpses of his old self, especially in a five set win against Roberto Bautista Agut, in the third round.

The Croat is back in familiar territory, at the US Open, but has already been pushed in the first round in a five setter, and had a none too easy four set win in the next round as well. Cilic will be looking to rekindle some of his old form, as the going only gets more difficult for him here on.

Dominic Thiem v Marin Cilic  Prediction & Tip

An exciting match between two top players, and Cilic being unseeded makes it much sooner than it should be in the draw, i.e. not your typical third round encounter.

Thiem comes in as a strong favorite, but Cilic has all the tools and experience to emerge victorious, especially on these hard courts. A good battle ahead; but expect the Austrian to prevail in four sets.

Tip: Thiem to win in four sets: 13/5 (bet365)
