Rublev Untested, and Keeps Rolling

Andrey Rublev was one of the hottest players on tour before the Covid-19 pandemic stopped everything. He had won two titles during the opening two weeks of the year and performed with distinction even in defeat. However, he lost his first match of the ATP tour’s resumption at last week’s Western & Southern Open to an in-form Dan Evans.

That was just but a hiccup, as Rublev has navigated his way into the US Open third round this week without dropping a set, beating Jeremy Chardy and Gregoire Barrere respectively.

Blessed with one with one of the most ferocious forehands in the game, Rublev figures to be a major threat on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows. He has been tight at times in an effort to keep the unforced errors count low with his all-or-nothing approach.

He landed 35 winners to 25 unforced errors in  beating Barrere, and in his two matches so far, he has conjured up over 80% of first serve points. The 22-year-old’s serve has been broken a mere three times in two matches, highlight an improvement in his game he has worked on during the break. Granted, there will tougher times ahead, Rublev is looking every inch as good to keep this winning momentum.

Caruso in Uncharted Territory

For Italian players in recent years, the dalliance with the US Open seems like a match made in heaven. First, there was the all-Italian final in 2015 US Open ladies final which was won by Flavia Pennetta over Roberta Vinci. Earlier at the same tournament, we saw Fabio Fognini stun Rafael Nadal in five sets, coming back from two-sets to love to hand a chastening defeat to the Spaniard.

And then there was Matteo Berretini’s sensational run to the semifinals last year, the first time an Italian man had reached that stage at the US Open in over four decades.

While those achievements are certainly in Italian tennis folklore, there could be room for yet another chapter this year for another underdog story. Salvatore Caruso is into third round of the US Open for the very first time in his career,  maximising on his half of the draw by beating James Duckworth and Ernesto Escobedo.

Caruso who had never won a match in New York in his previous three visits (failed to qualify to main draw), has now equaled his career-best achievement at a Grand Slam (also made the third round of the French Open in 2019)

Rublev v Caruso Prediction & Tip

Rublev has not been spectacular, but he does look pretty formidable. It would take a really courageous effort to take him out, and for Caruso the fairy-tale certainly looks to be over in this one.

Tip: Under 30.5 games: 10/11 (bet365)
