Daniil Medvedev v Andrey Rublev Head to Head
Medvedev leads the head-to-head 2-0, with both their meetings in 2019 on the hard courts. They met in the quarter-finals at Cincinnati and St. Petersburg respectively, and Medvedev won both in straight sets. Incidentally, he went on to win both titles.

The 2019 hard court season was a memorable one for Russian Next Gen Daniil Medvedev, with the highlights being appearing in six finals, being a US Open finalist and winning Masters 1000 titles at Cincinnati and Shanghai. Medvedev reached a career high ranking of world number four after the US Open as well.
Although his showing at the year-end ATP Finals in London was off color, Medvedev came into the 2020 season with immense promise. The first two months of the season had glimpses of the Medvedev of 2019, but was marred by unexpected losses, both during the Australian Open and the indoor tournaments during February.
He got off to a confident start at the Western & Southern Open ATP Masters 1000 this week, and looked in control of his quarter-final match against Roberto Bautista-Agut, until a drop in concentration resulted in a tight tussle and a close loss for Medvedev.
Although he is yet to play a noteworthy opponent yet this fortnight, the number four seed has looked mercilessly relentless. He is yet to drop a single set and has made upcoming players like Frances Tiafoe look very pedestrian. With Novak Djokovic out of the draw, Medvedev is definitely looking the bookmaker’s favorite, and despite challenging fellow Next Gen challengers like Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, Denis Shapovalov and others around, it will take some doing to scalp the Russian world number five in this mood.
All aspects of Medvedev’s game have been clicking and he is bringing back memories of his 2019 hard court form. This time around though, the Big Three caliber are missing from week two, and Medvedev is even better established on the circuit than 12 months back. His potential semi-final match-up against Dominic Thiem is being billed as the match of the tournament in the waiting.

Rublev Pulls One Back Against Berrettini This Time
After a year full of injuries, Andrey Rublev returned to the tour in the latter part of 2019. The Russian performed well to win the Kremlin Cup, as well as register wins against the best on the tour such as Roger Federer, Stanislas Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem and others.
2020 got off to a perfect start for Rublev, who won the Qatar Open and Adelaide International in early-mid January. He broke into the top 20 of the ATP rankings, and arrived in Melbourne for the Australian Open high on confidence. A fourth round loss to Alexander Zverev made for a disappointing exit, but he followed it with quarter-final losses at both Rotterdam and Dubai ATP 500s, before the season closed down for the pandemic.
After a disappointing early loss to Dan Evans at the Western & Southern Open, the number ten seed has looked in very good form here at the US Open. Three convincing straight set wins set him up for a fourth round repeat against Italian Mattero Berrettini and after a 4-6 first set loss, Rublev came back strongly to clinch the next three sets in routine fashion.
With one of the most dangerous running forheands in the game, Rublev is in a US Open quarter-final for the second time, and unlike 2017, will fancy his chances much more than he did then against eventual US Open winner Rafael Nadal.
Medvedev v Rublev Prediction & Tip
The clash of the Russian young brigade always brings camaraderie mixed with rivalry and this will be no less. Although Medvedev has dominated Rublev in their two previous meetings, this time around should be more competitive. It will be Medvedev’s first tricky opponent and he will be wary of Rublev’s current form.
Expect some powerful shot making and exchange of points, and while Rublev will not be a pushover by any means, Medvedev’s current form should see him through in four sets.
