Eugenie Bouchard v Danka Kovinic Head to Head

This will be the second time Bouchard and Kovinic will be playing each other with their first encounter having come at the Mallorca Open in 2016. Bouchard had won that opening round match on grass in straight sets.

Bouchard Stuns Kuznetsova

While we did predict there is a good chance Bouchard could get the better of Svetlana Kuznetsova, the fact she actually did it would have pleased her no doubt given all that has gone around in the previous few seasons. A drastic fall in the rankings had seen her plummet to outside the top 300 but a few good rounds over the last couple of weeks have helped.

Nothing would give her more confidence than this win though.

Beating Ivana Jorovic and Leonie Kung in the qualifiers was a job well done while a win over Viktoriya Tomova in the first round would have been a step in the right direction. To beat Kuznetsova, however, a Grand Slam winner and a current top 40 player, would have told Bouchard she still belongs among the top bracket of players.

While the road back to the top 40 itself is still a few steps away, a quarterfinal berth here will go a long way in helping her climb back the rankings ladder.

Kovinic in Two Straight-Set Wins

Once ranked 46th in the world, Kovinic has slipped down to 92nd, and since the return from the pandemic break, she has featured in the Cincinnati Open and US Open and lost two of the three matches she played there.

Which is why there were doubts about how far would the Montenegro player go coming into this tournament, arguably though on her favourite surface. And she has already shown what she is capable of.

Kovinic defeated Kateryna Bondarenko in straight sets in the first round of this Istanbul Cup but her real test was going to be a seeded player – and it came in the from of Alison van Uytvanck. Kovinic completed a 6-3, 6-4 rout of the fourth seed to march into this match-up with Bouchard.

Can she now get closer to her first ever WTA title?

Bouchard v Kovinic Prediction & Tip

While we reckon Eugenie Bouchard is a favourite here and she starts 8/15 to win this, we also think it might not be the most straightforward of encounters. A three-setter looks likely.

Tip: Bouchard to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
