Julia Goerges v Danka Kovinic Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between Goerges and Kovinic and both have won one apiece. In the first which was held on the clay courts of Bucharest in 2015, Kovinic won in three sets, before Goerges had her revenge in Moscow in 2016 indoors.

Season Resumes in Rome for Goerges

Goerges hasn’t played a single match since the resumption of the season in August; neither did she take part in any of the clay court competitions in the early part of the month nor did she travel to the US for the Lexington Open, Cincinnati Open or US Open.

The last time she played was in a match at the bett1 Aces exhibition tournament, a match on grass against Anatasija Sevastova which resulted in her defeat. Nothing before and after that during the pandemic, which was slightly curious given everyone else was busy getting back into some kind of rhythm.

The German’s season had begun with a quarterfinal exit at the Auckland Open and a second round place in Adelaide before she defeated Petra Martic to make the third round at the Australian Open. After failing to qualify at Dubai and getting knocked out in the first round at Doha, Goerges would have probably wondered what she could do to turn things around when the pandemic break came about.

Rustiness and lack of game time will be an obvious issue for the German, especially against a player who despite being a qualifier has been playing some tennis in recent times.

Kovinic Coming off a Quarterfinal in Istanbul

A qualifying loss at the Cincinnati Open and a second round appearance at the US Open was the extent of Kovinic’s appearances on hard courts after tennis resumed. She shifted her focus to clay after that and in her very first tournament on the surface for the season, Kovinic surprised a few by reaching the quarterfinal at the Istanbul Cup.

There, she defeated Kateryna Bondarenko and Alison van Uytvanck before suffering a tough, three-set loss at the hands of the eventual runner-up Eugenie Bouchard.

And a day after that defeat she was in Rome playing these qualifiers, where she won a couple of rounds to march into the main draw. That shouldn’t be too much of a surprise from the 25-year-old who has won 12 ITF-level competitions and all of them have come on clay too.

She will think she has a chance given her opponent’s lack of time on court.

Goerges v Kovinic Prediction & Tip

Goerges might be a favourite here but we think Kovinic has the game to cause a major upset here in round one of the tournament.

Tip: Kovinic to win: 11/8 (bet365)
