Elena Rybakina v Marie Bouzkova Head to Head

This will be the first time the 21-year-old Rybakina and 22-year-old Bouzkova will be facing off in a competitive encounter at this level.

Rybakina Crushes Alexandrova in Opener

Before she knew it, Ekaterina Alexandrova had lost the first set of her opener against Rybakina, and while she fought hard in the second set, she proved to be no match for the 18th-ranked Kazakh.

Rybakina, who had won the Hobart International earlier in the season and made it to three other WTA finals other than that win, looked slightly rusty at the resumption of the season. In fact, in her very first match back, having not played any competitive tennis at the exhibition level either, Rybakina lost to Alexandrova in straight sets at the Cincinnati Open.

This was followed by a second round defeat at the US Open at the hands of Shelby Rogers which would have made critics question her preparedness.

On a surface, however, where she had won her maiden WTA title last year in Bucharest, she has started off well winning 6-0, 6-4. The cobwebs seemed to be dusted and the form back. Can she continue winning though?

Bouzkova Yet to Shine on Clay

In the seasons leading up to her opening round win here in Rome, Bouzkova’s best showing on clay had been a string of first round losses. In 2019, for instance, Bouzkova was a lucky loser at the Prague Open and lost in straight sets in the opener, and qualified for the French Open before falling at the first hurdle again.

Let’s go back a year, and things were even worse for the Czech. She participated in four tournaments on clay and failed to make it to the main draw at either while in 2017, her only main draw appearance on red dirt came at Nurnberg.

Which is why Bouzkova’s first round win against Ajla Tomljanovic, was both unexpected and pleasantly surprising for the world number 47. That she won in two, easy sets made it more special.

Can she make it two in two though? That seems to be a difficult ask as things stand given Rybakina’s stature on clay and the fact she just needed to shrug off the rust – which she did in style in round one.

Rybakina v Bouzkova Prediction & Tip

No surprises here as Rybakina starts off 2/5 to win this match and we are backing the Kazakh to make it through to the third round.

Tip: Rybakina to win: 2/5 (bet365)
