Borna Coric v Stefano Travaglia Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 23-year-old Croat, and the Italian, who is five years his senior.

Coric Will be Buoyed by New York Run

Coric has seen his recent career progression stalled by injury, and he missed a lot of last season with a back injury.

Once ranked as high as 12 in the world, that form helped him win two ATP titles, on the clay of Marrakesh in 2017, and the grass of Halle in 2018, and he has also been in four more finals, the most recent of which was in St. Petersburg last year.

This year, there are signs that he may be getting back to his best again, with a run to the semi-finals in Rio on clay, before losing to Christian Garin of Chile.

And he comes to Rome full of confidence after his performance in New York, where he reached the quarter-final of a Grand Slam event for the first time in his career. His wins in New York, included a third-round battling win over Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, the world number six, Coric coming from behind to win.

Alexander Zverev eventually defeated him, but he carried some of his form over into the first round here on Monday, by getting his revenge on clay court specialist Garin for that defeat in Rio, winning in straight sets.

Will There be a Home Advantage for Travaglia?

Travaglia, the Italian who is playing in his home Masters’ event, achieved a career high ranking of 74 earlier this year, after reaching the final of the Challenger event in Bendigo, Australia. Unusually for him, that was played on hard courts – all 23 of his title wins in the junior tours have come on clay.

He has never won a senior ATP title though.

Apart from that loss to Jordan Thompson of Australia in Bendigo, he did little of note in 2020 prior to lockdown, losing in the first round in Melbourne, Pune, and Marseille.

Nor has his performances notably improved since the resumption of the sport.

He failed to qualify for the Cincinnati Open, and was beaten in the first round in New York by Thompson again.

However, given a wildcard for this tournament, he did enjoy a morale boosting win over Taylor Fritz, the world number 28 on Monday, beating the American in straight sets.

Coric v Travaglia Prediction and Tip

Coric comes into this match full of form and confidence after his recent run in New York. Travaglia will be buoyed by his win over Fritz, but he has not been playing well on the senior tour this year, and the Croat will start a heavy favourite.

Tip: Coric to win: 2/5 (bet365)
