Stefanos Tsitsipas v Dan Evans Head to Head

The only meeting between the two players was at the Dubai Open semi-finals earlier this year, which was won very convincingly by Tsitsipas.

Tsitsipas Still Looking to Recover from US Open Defeat

Stefanos Tsitsipas ended 2019 as the winner of the year-end ATP Tour Finals, which by far has been the biggest achievement of his career thus far. Coming into 2020 with lofty expectations, the season did not get off to the best of starts for him.

His performance at the ATP Cup was far from optimal and it was followed by the Australian Open, where he faced an early loss against Milos Raonic, and another early loss at the Rotterdam ATP 500.

However, Tsitsipas hit a good run, defending his title at Marseille without dropping a set and made the final in Dubai again before being runner-up, this time to Novak Djokovic.

Returning to the tour after the pandemic, he looked in good touch at the Western & Southern Open prevailing against the big serves of Kevin Anderson, John Isner and Reilly Opelka before being outplayed by the Milos Raonic serve again, in the semi-finals.

A strong start at the US Open followed, winning his opening two rounds convincingly in straight sets and he looked ready for week two, up two sets to one and a double break against Croat Borna Coric in the third round. However, a loss of focus and nerves saw him give away six match points in the fourth set, only to lose in a final set tie-break.

Tstisipas did not have the best of returns to clay with a three set opening round loss at the Rome Masters 1000 against Italian teenager Jannik Sinner. The Greek is the second seed at Hamburg, but it is a difficult draw for almost everyone and he will be hoping to get some wins under his belt this week, heading to the French Open.

Evans Yet To Hit Good Form Since Pandemic Return

2019 was a strong year for Britain’s number one seed Dan Evans.  Evans registered wins across the ATP and Challenger tours, and won two Challengers at Nottingham and Sorbiton on grass, in the UK.

2020 started off well for Evans with a good showing at the ATP Cup, a quarter-final showing at Adelaide and a semi-final in Dubai. Breaking into the top 30 of the world rankings right before the pandemic, Evans promised a lot upon his return to the tour with a win against Andrey Rublev at the Western & Southern Open.

However, second round losses followed at both Western & Southern and at the US Open, and the return to clay at the Rome Masters saw an opening round loss to Hubert Hurkacz. Evans’ record on clay is not particularly encouraging as that remains his least favorite surface and he will be hoping to hit some sort of form on clay before the French Open.

Tsitsipas v Evans Prediction and Tip

A clash of two single handled backhands, with both players yet to hit form on clay and  hoping for a good run this week, ahead of the French Open. Expect Tsitsipas to get the better of his opponent in two well-matched sets.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in straight sets: 4/9 (bet365)
