Jil Teichmann v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

This will be the first time Teichmann and Pavlyuchenkova will be facing off in a competitive match at this level.

Teichmann Shocks Anisimova

Teichmann was ranked 175th on the WTA charts last April. A couple of solid performances during the clay swing changed things around drastically as the Barcelona-born Swiss player first broke into the top 100 and is now too far away from making it to the top 50.

The turnaround has been thanks to, in part, the three tournaments she won last season, one at the lower tier and then at Palermo and Prague.

Which is also why when she entered the Italian Open last week and had to play Anna Blinkova, not too many believed she would end up losing that first round encounter in straight sets.

It was probably rustiness. Probably the difficulties involved in making that switch from hard courts to clay – Teichmann had opted against defending her titles earlier. Because when she came into her second match on this surface here, against the higher-ranked and rated Amanda Anisimova, she was the clear second-favourite.

Teichmann, however, looked like the Rome loss had been put behind her as she raced off to 6-2, 6-3 victory against the American to march into this second round. She will be a dangerous opponent against whoever she plays this week.

Former French Open Quarterfinalist Pavlyuchenkova Searching for Form

Pavlyuchenkova has made it to the quarterfinal of each of the four majors, including the French Open but that happened way back in 2011. Since then, her performances haven’t been up to the scratch having reached the third round of that tournament just once.

Her top showing at the Madrid Open has also been an appearance in the quarterfinals, but again, that came in 2011.

Interestingly though, Pavlyuchenkova’s last title on the WTA circuit came at this very tournament in 2018, and the manner in which she dispatched Alison van Uytvanck in her opener points to the Russian light still burning bright on clay. Especially in Strasbourg.

The question is if she can do enough to trouble the in-form Teichmann.

Teichmann v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction & Tip

This one is an interesting call with Teichmann only a slight favourite at 4/5 to Pavlyuchenkova’s 10/11. Teichmann’s beating of Anisimova should suggest her rhythm on clay is back, especially given her overall clay court record, which is why we will go with that option.

Tip: Teichmann to win: 4/5 (bet365)
