Andrey Rublev v Casper Ruud Head to Head

The world number 14 Rublev has played Ruud once before on the tour and another time in an exhibition match and won both times. Their first match came at the Hamburg Open itself where Rublev needed three sets to make it to the quarterfinal before they met at the Thiem’s 7 Invitational competition earlier this season. The Russian was stretched to another three-setter.

Rublev Hunting for Third Title of the Season

It was in the beginning of the season that Rublev won a couple of ATP titles, at Doha and Adelaide. He followed it up with a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open and when the season resumed again in August, Rublev made it as far as the quarterfinal at the US Open.

Having played all these tournaments on hard court, a switch to clay was expected to be a tough one despite the Russian having played at the Adria Tour and the Thiem’s 7 Invitational. In fact he ended the two tournaments with a 8-1 win-loss, recording wins over Alexander Zverev, Matteo Berrettini, Dominic Thiem and Ruud.

At his first clay court tournament, Rublev fell in the second round of the Rome Masters, but he has now gone two better already in Hamburg. After demolishing Tennys Sandgren in the opening round, he was taken to three sets by Tommy Paul before crushing Roberto Bautista-Agut in the quarterfinal.

Rublev won his previous match 6-2, 7-5 and now plays another man in form for a place in the final.

The Ruud March Continues

It’s now 15-3 on clay this season for Casper Ruud, a record most players will be proud of. And barring a shock first round defeat at the Rio Open, Ruud has managed to make all his other tournaments on clay count.

After having clinched the first title of his career in Argentina in February, Ruud stormed into the final of the Santiago Open where he lost to Thiago Seyboth Wild. And post the pandemic break, the Norwegian player took a few people by surprise when he also made the semifinal at the Rome Masters.

Despite showing that touch on clay, Ruud has opted to play in Hamburg just before the French Open. A strong showing here will add to his confidence as he attempts to make it to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

That said, a win here will also mean he will be playing on Sunday, reaching Paris the next day and in all probability featuring in his opener there on Tuesday. A toughie for the youngster.

Rublev v Ruud Prediction and Tip

Ruud is 6/4 to win this but we think he could hold the edge on clay. Backing him to get past Rublev who is yet to set clay courts alight in the bigger tournaments – majors or masters.

Tip: Ruud to win: 6/4 (bet365)
