Maria Sakkari v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

In their only previous match which was played in the Bol Open in 2017, Sakkari had won in three sets to move into the second set.

Sakkari’s Played Just One Match on Clay in 2020

In sharp contrast to how Sakkari’s clay court swing went last season, this year she has played just one match and lost that. It came at the start of the post-pandemic break when Sakkari opted to feature in the first tennis tournament organised, in Palermo and went down to Kristyna Pliskova in straight sets.

It’s surprising then, she hasn’t played in any of the remaining clay court competitions in the lead-up to the French Open.

Last year, Sakkari had won a clay court title in Rabat, and then as a qualifier in Rome, the Greek made it all the way to the semifinal. In doing so, Sakkari defeated Anett Kontaveit and Petra Kvitova before losing to Karolina Pliskova.

That said, Sakkari has form on her side. She was a quarterfinalist at the Cincinnati Open where she defeated Serena Williams and reached the fourth round at the US Open, where her campaign was ended by the same player.

Tomljanovic 0-2 on Clay This Season

The Aussie Tomljanovic did feature on clay in an exhibition tournament during the break – winning both matches – but since returning from it, she has played at Rome and Strasbourg and lost her openers at both.

What will worry her more is she wasn’t dealt a bad draw either. Those defeats came at the hands of Marie Bouzkova and Shuai Zhang, but here’s the kicker. Tomljanovic’s form has been no better on hard court surfaces either.

Since making it to the second round at the Qatar Open in the last week of February this year, Tomljanovic has lost her first round matches at the Lexington Open, Cincinnati Open and US Open as well – Yulia Putintseva, Veronika Kudermetova and Angelique Kerber ousting her in those competitions,

The only ray of hope for the Aussie comes in the form of her best showing in Grand Slam – it came at the French Open of 2014 – but since then things haven’t gone too well on clay for her.

Sakkari v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Sakkari starts off at 3/10 to win this and we reckon it could be a fairly straightforward victory too.

Tip: Sakkari to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
