Stefanos Tsitsipas ended 2019 as the winner of the year-end ATP Tour Finals, which by far has been the biggest achievement of his career thus far. Coming into 2020 with lofty expectations, the season did not get off to the best of starts for him.

His performance at the ATP Cup was far from optimal and it was followed by the Australian Open, where he faced an early loss against Milos Raonic, and another early loss at the Rotterdam ATP 500.

However, Tsitsipas hit a good run, defending his title at Marseille without dropping a set and made the final in Dubai again before being runner-up, this time to Novak Djokovic.

Returning to the tour after the pandemic, he looked in good touch at the Western & Southern Open prevailing against the big serves of Kevin Anderson, John Isner and Reilly Opelka before being outplayed by the Milos Raonic serve again, in the semi-finals.

A strong start at the US Open followed, winning his opening two rounds convincingly in straight sets and he looked ready for week two, up two sets to one and a double break against Croat Borna Coric in the third round. However, a loss of focus and nerves saw him give away six match points in the fourth set, only to lose in a final set tie-break.

Tstisipas did not have the best of returns to clay with a three set opening round loss at the Rome Masters 1000 against Italian teenager Jannik Sinner.

However, he was the second seed at Hamburg and despite some difficult matches, prevailed and did well to make the finals against Andrey Rublev, where he lost in a decider. The Greek has has good practice and confidence on clay, but it remains to be seen if the busy schedule, tournament overlap, quarantine and other such have an impact on his performance early at the French Open.

Munar Good On Clay, But Good Enough For An Upset?

Jaume Munar had a 31-19 win-loss record in 2019 on the clay, but this season did not go as per plans. Having kick-started his season at the Canberra Challenger, Munar gave himself bit of a chance when he made it as far as the quarterfinal there.

A second round appearance at the Australian Open followed soon after but what was much awaited was the Spaniard’s performance on clay.

It started with a second round loss at the Cordoba Open and was followed by another first round loss at Buenos Aires. And then after winning his opener at Rio he met Dominic Thiem and while he fought to take the first set off the Austrian he went down in three.

In his final tournament before the season went on a break because of the pandemic, Munar lost his opener at Santiago.

On his return, Munar failed to make it to the main draw at the Western & Southern Open and withdrew with an injury being down a set in the US Open round one against Dominic Thiem.

He has spent most of the last few weeks playing Challengers on clay and is up for a stiff test against Tsitsipas.

Tsitsipas v Munar Prediction and Tip

Although Tsitsipas maybe tired after the quick turnaround, he has been in good form and will be confident. Munar, on the other hand, has not had the best of seasons and Tsitsipas starts as a strong favorite and should prevail in straight sets.

Tip: Tsitsipas in three sets : 8/11 (bet365)
