Solid Showing In Opener By Agut

Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut was off the tour for a week after the US Open, as he is a newly turned father, with his wife giving birth.  He has been among the more consistent players on the tour for the last season and a half.

His return to the clay was mixed at the Hamburg Open with good wins against two time defending champion Nikoloz Basilashvili and in-form German Dominik Koepfer before a defeat to eventual champion Andrey Rublev.

Seeded tenth at the French Open, Agut finds himself in the same half of the draw as Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Denis Shapovalov and Daniil Medvedev, drawing French veteran Richard Gasquet in the opener. Although not what he was once upon a time, Gasquet is a former Grand Slam semi-finalist and knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

The Frenchman was off to a solid start breaking Agut twice in the first set, to be up 5-2. But, as always, the gritty and persevering Spaniard dug in and fought back, to equalize the set first and then push it into the tie-breaker. Strong court coverage on both sides saw Agut hold his ground, and win the breaker 7-5 to take the set.

The Agut comeback in the first set saw the tide turn and it was all one-way traffic there on. The Spaniard won the next two sets 6-2, 6-1 with a total of eight breaks of serve in the match for him.

A disciplined and clinical Agut performance is always difficult to match and that is where Gasquet fell short. It was evident that the Frenchman’s career is waning and that the levels of consistency that one sees from Agut over the last two seasons are among the best in the sport, second only to the Big Three and maybe Dominic Thiem.

The Agut serve, which is although not as big and attractive as some of the others, maintained its consistency with a 66% service percentage for the match and six aces overall.

Balazs Hoping To Put Up A Challenge

Attila Balazs from Hungary has been on the tour for a while and is ranked just within the top 100. A player who has spent a lot of time on the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Futures Tours, he surprised all making the finals of the Croatia Open on clay last year before being defeated by Dusan Lajovic.

The Hungarian had a good start to the year, doing well on clay during the LatAm swing, especially the semi-finals of the Rio Open. His post pandemic return to the tour has been less impressive losing out in the qualifiers a few times.

He has matched his best slam performance again with a second round at the French Open. Balazs was off to a promising start against Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama in the first round here, winning convincingly in straight sets.

Agut v Attila Balazs Prediction and Tip

After a resounding performance against French veteran Gasquet, not a lot of doubt on the outcome of this match. Expect a routine Agut victory without much ado.

Tip: Agut to win in straight sets: 4/9 (bet365)
