Berrettini Among Five Italians in Round of 32

In what has been a historic French Open for the Italians so far, Matteo Berrettini joined four of his compatriots in the third round of the tournament. This is the first time in the Open Era that more than three Italians have made it to the Round of 32 of the same major.

A 2019 U.S. Open semifinalist, Berrettini defeated South Africa’s Lloyd Harris 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in 2 hours and 41 minutes to match his best ever Roland Garros showing, which came two years ago, when he advanced to the third round, before being beaten by Dominic Thiem.

The 24-year-old right-hander, who outplayed Canada’s Vasek Popisil in the first round with a 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 win, looked good against Harris in the second round as well, as he struck 39 winners and made 39 unforced errors compared to the South African’s 26 winners and 48 unforced errors.

A winner of two clay court events and a grass court title on the tour, Berrettini was a break down early in the first set before he won four games on the trot to take the set 6-4. He was broken again early in the second, but this time he couldn’t overturn it and Harris capitalized on the opportunity to level the match at 1-set all. The Italian, who converted 5 of 9 break points in the match, got his act together in the next two sets to close out the match in 4.

A quarterfinalist at the Italian Open last month, Berrettini had made it to the fourth round of this year’s U.S. Open before being beaten by Russia’s Andriy Rublev in four sets. At the Australian Open, the 6’5” Italian was beaten by Tennys Sandgren in the second round.

Berrettini will next face an unheralded German, who has put up an impressive show over the last two weeks in Paris.

Altmaier Continues To Impress

Before arriving in Paris, Daniel Altamaier had never ever appeared in a qualifier at a grand slam. Two weeks on, the German, ranked 186th in the world, finds himself in the Round of 32, thanks to a superlative display through the first three qualifying rounds followed by even better showing in the first two rounds of the main draw.

Altmaier, who shocked World No. 57 Feliciano Lopez in the first round of the French Open on Monday, caused another upset on Thursday, when he defeated fellow German Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets to advance to the third round of the competition.

In a contest that lasted 2 hours and 32 minutes Altmaier knocked out the 30th seed with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory.

On Monday, Altmaier had taken 2 hours and 38 minutes to beat the 39-year-old Spaniard 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-4.

The 22-year-old 6’3” right-hander, who has 9 Futures titles, had a career record of 2-4 at the Tour level before the start of the event in Paris.

Having dropped just one set in five matches at Roland Garros, Altmaier is looking dangerous and will be hoping to give Berrettini a tough fight on Saturday.

Berrettini v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

Altmaier has shown that he is capable of punching above his weight, and Berrettini will be wary of this aspect of his opponent. Expect an intriguing contest, with the Italian ending the German’s fascinating run with a tough four set win.

Tip: Four sets in the match: 13/8 (bet365)
