There have been 10 previous matches between Nadal and Schwartzman in the past and the Spaniard had won the first nine. In the last tournament he played before coming into the French Open, Nadal was gunning for his 10th victory but Schwartzman did not just beat him but also did that in straight sets on his way to the Rome Masters final.

And while Schwartzman lost to Novak Djokovic in that final, the win over Nadal and the subsequent march into the final has given the Argentine confidence like no other. He has now made it to the semifinal of a Grand Slam for the first time, having had three previous quarterfinal defeats before this.

On his way to doing that, Schwartzman has already gotten past Dominic Thiem, a player tipped to lift the French Open crown for a couple of years at least.

Nadal’s had fewer problems. In fact in the three matches between rounds two and four, the Spaniard dropped five or fewer games and even when he was stretched, for a while in his opener against Egor Gerasimov and then in the first set by Jannik Sinner, Nadal has come through in straight sets.

Here’s what’s interesting. Till before the quarterfinal, Nadal was trailing Djokovic in the favourites list. It was a marginal difference but a crucial one because it gave an insight into what the bookmakers thought. After their previous round, Nadal has popped up to the top spot again, again pipping Djokovic marginally down to second.

The other factor to look into is how fresh Nadal is as compared to Schwartzman, who was really stretched by Thiem in his quarterfinal. Fortunately for the Argentine his previous rounds were all straight-set wins.
