Filip Krajinovic v Steve Johnson Head to Head

The pair have met once before in a round of 16 match at the Memphis Open in 2015. Johnson won on that occasion in straight sets.

Krajinovic Suffered Surprise Loss in Paris

Krajinovic went into the French Open with reasonable expectations that he might do well, having reached the third round in Rome. However, those hopes were soon dashed as he was beaten in the first round by Nikola Milojevic, a man ranked 115 places below him in the world.

Prior to that he had been in good form – apart from that run in Rome, he also reached the third round at the US Open, and he was a quarter-finalist in Cincinnati.

The 28-year old is still seeking his first senior ATP career title, but he has had success on the junior tours, where he has won 12 events, and been in 13 more finals.

He has always said that his preferred service is hard courts, so he will be happy to be in Cologne and the chance to use his favourite shot, the backhand drive.

Johnson Has Just Once Win Since Lockdown

Johnson fared no better than Krajinovic in Paris, also losing in the first round, this time to the Spaniard Roberto-Carballes Baena in straight sets.

In fact, since competitive tennis returned after lockdown, Johnson has one won one match on the ATP tour, although that was a victory to savour, defeating compatriot John Isner in the first round of the US Open in five sets.

This contrasts with his form earlier in the year, when he won two events in the Challenger tour – at Bendigo in Australia in January, and then in Indian Wells two months later where he beat Jack Sock in the final.

It has been two years since he won the last of his four senior ATP titles – the Hall of Fame Championship on grass in Newport, although he did reach the final of the doubles at the New York Open in February with Reilly Opelka.

Krajinovic v Johnson Prediction and Tip

Although both men will be happy to be back on hard courts after their clay exertions, Krajinovic was in the better form of the pair prior to Paris, and will be hoping to pick up where he left of.

Tip: Krajinovic to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
