Ugo Humbert v Pavel Kotov Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the twenty-two-year-old Frenchman, and the Russian, who is a year younger than him.

Humbert Trying to Take off Since Auckland Win

Humbert won his first senior ATP title in January in New Zealand, beating compatriot Benoit Paire to win the Auckland Open. He had also enjoyed, prior to that, a degree of success on the Challenger tour, winning three titles last year.

That was enough for him to qualify for the NextGen ATP finals in Milan last November, although he did not get beyond the round robin stage.

He struggled to replicate that Auckland form after that prior to lockdown, with his best result coming in Delray Beach, where he reached the last eight.

Since the resumption of the sport, he reached the second round in New York, and the third-round stage in both Rome and Hamburg. However, his hopes of doing well in his home Grand Slam event in Paris were dashed when he was beaten by the Australian, Marc Polmans, in the first round.

What Humbert would like is to reset and try and find his way back into the deeper rounds of these tournaments before the start of the next season.

Russian Qualifier Kotov Hoping to Make a Mark

21-year old Kotov is barely known outside his native Russia, but has had a career high ranking of 245 in singles which he attained earlier this year.

He has won three ITF Futures titles, but arguably his greatest success to date was reaching the final of the doubles event of the Challenger event in Cherbourg earlier this year, going on to win the tournament with his partner and compatriot Roman Safiullin.

He has missed a lot of tennis this year through injury, and only returned to action in the qualifying tournament here. There he beat first Jurij Rodinov of Austria, and then Emilio Gomez of Ecuador, both in three sets, with each of them being higher ranked than him.

This is his first time in the main draw of a senior ATP event.

Humbert v Kotov Prediction and Tip

This should be a straightforward task for Humbert against a man wholly inexperienced at this level. Kotov has done well to get this far, but his involvement in the tournament will almost certainly end here.

Tip: Humbert to win in straight sets: 8/15 (bet365)
