It’s not what Rublev would have expected out of his second round match but in the end he had registered another win. That victory over Ugo Humbert had taken his recent record to 16-3, spread across three different surfaces.
And that’s what’s making him more and more dangerous.
Rublev, who played in the Thiem’s 7 Invitational competition on clay just prior to the resumption of the season, had won four of his five matches there including one against Dominic Thiem.
He quickly switched over to hard court tennis and reached the quarterfinal at the US Open, and then back on clay was a quarterfinalist at the French Open as well. And now, playing indoors at home, he has already made it through to the quarterfinals.
Due credit to Humbert for snatching the first set off him, and pushing him the way he did though. Rublev was broken while serving to stay in the first set, and then levelled the proceedings with a couple of breaks of serve of his own.
Even in the final set, Rublev survived a few nervous moments before he managed to carve out a break at love in the 11th game before serving it out easily.

Norrie Surprises Kecmanovic
We had a fair idea it wouldn’t be too easy for the favourite in their second round match, Miomir Kecmanovic but for Cameron Norrie to edge out the Serb in a tough battle was slightly surprising.
Norrie, who had earlier needed three sets to get over the line in the first round when he defeated Taylor Fritz, overcame a fighting performance from Kecmanovic to register another three-set victory. He won 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 in a man of fluctuating fortunes to set up this meeting with Rublev.
The Brit got an early break of serve, lost serve very soon after and then endured another such exchange to take it to 5-5 in the first set. A hold of serve followed by two set-points ensured Norrie would pouch in the opening set.
Things went on serve till 4-4 in the second set, when Kecmanovic broke Norrie in the next, only to get broken while serving for the set. In the tie-breaker, however, the Serb got the early mini-break and then converted the first set-point he got at 6-5 to take the encounter into a decider.
With a US Open third round appearance under his belt earlier this season, Norrie shook off the hold his opponent had had with two breaks of serve in the final set to complete a three-set win.
Norrie will now face a player who is in the form of his life, having catapulted into the top 10 on the ATP rankings as a result. His run could be over even before he knows.
Rublev v Norrie Prediction and Tip
Odds are tipping Rublev for a runaway win with the Russian a mere 1/7 to reach the semifinal. While that makes sense given the obvious difference between the two, we think Norrie could pose a different challenge as a left-hander and that could help the Brit cause bit of an early surprise.
