Alexander Zverev v Felix Auger-Aliassime Head to Head

At tour level, Zverev won both their meetings in 2019 in straight sets, on the clay of Monte Carlo and the indoor hard courts of Beijing. They also met twice at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in France during lockdown, with German coming out victorious yet again both matches.

Zverev Averages One Title A Season Since 2016

Alexander Zverev remains on course to win yet another ATP tour title for the fifth season running after edging past Next Gen star Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 7-5 7-6 in nearly two hours, a stark contrast to their fourth round meeting at the US Open where the German dropped only five games in the whole match against the flamboyant Spaniard.

Zverev had made a real statement of intent in his opener as he bids to win a third title on home soil (following back-to-back success in Munich in 2017 & 2018). He dispatched Fernando Verdasco in over an hour, but was pushed to three sets by Lloyd Harris in the quarterfinals.

After dropping the second set to the South African, he managed to address that blip by handing out a bagel in the decider.

Following on from that aforementioned win over Davidovich Fokina in the semifinals in which he fired 10 aces, the 23-year-old has now won nine of his past ten matches on hard courts. He also seems to have brushed his critics aside with a tremendous run of form since the tour’s resumption. The Grand Slam riddle is now very much in the rearview mirror, having broken ground at this year’s Australian Open and US Open respectively.

Can he put a seal on a perfect week on Cologne against Canada’s fast-rising star?

Auger-Aliassime is 0-5 in Tour-Level Finals

Auger-Aliassime will have to defy history and the odds if he is to claim his first ATP tour title of his fledgling career. The young Canadian has stumbled at the last hurdle five times before in championship matches, but he has been extremely unlucky at the caliber of opponents he faced in that stretch.

His task to break his duck will not be any easier on Sunday in Cologne, playing a local favorite and an in-form world no.7 Alexander Zverev. But the level of maturity he continues to show is admirable and has been a keynote in his stay in Germany this week.

He beat seasoned veterans Henri Laaksonen and Radu Albot without breaking sweat. In the semifinals he faced his toughest test yet against Roberto Bautista Agut. The Spaniard, one of the most consistent baseliners in the game, had no answer to Auger-Aliassime’s weight of shot off either wing.

The Canadian’s powerful serve and bludgeoning forehand complemented his elite athleticism, and when the match headed the distance there was always going to be one winner.

The 20-year-old struck seven aces past the experienced Spaniard, won over 70% first serve points and crucially broke in both the first and third sets.

Can he come up trumps in the final on Sunday and win his maiden ATP tour title?

Zverev v Auger-Aliassime Prediction and Tip

Auger-Aliassime’s record in finals is slightly worrying, but he will without doubt reverse that trend in the not too distant future. There will be minority who see him ending his personal drought on Sunday, and we reckon he might. For Zverev, his game revolves around his monstrous first serve.

If he picks the right spots behind his first delivery, he can very much dictate play with the forehand at will. But there have been patches this week, and during the course of the US Open which clearly show the German can vulnerable on serve and in baseline exchanges extending beyond the odd three or five shots. While history is against him, Auger-Aliassime will be buoyed to puncture that losing sequence.

Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win: 7/4 (bet365)
