Having last played indoors in 2018, this will be a good time for Kontaveit to test it out yet again after showing sparkle in a few of the tournaments all year.
While she didn’t have a great time on clay, losing in the second round in Rome and opening match at the French Open, Kontaveit’s 14-7 record on hard courts this year should keep her in a good stead. A quarterfinal at the Australian Open and a fourth round appearance at the US Open point to a much-improved performance – her best year in Grand Slam tennis.
Where Kontaveit has been specifically good is her performance against players not ranked very high – her losses on hard court surfaces have rarely been against non-favourites in matches.
Case in point are those two defeats at the Cincinnati Open and US Open, both of which came at hands of Naomi Osaka after winning six matches in all. She takes on a tricky opponent though.

Alexandrova Unable to Sustain Early Season Form
The Russian had begun her year with an excellent win at the Shenzhen Open where she defeated Wang Qiang, Garbine Muguruza and Elena Rybakina to clinch the title. There was a third round appearance at the Australian Open which she followed with a couple of wins in the Fed Cup and a semifinal at the St. Petersburg Open.
Since then, however, her form has fallen away quickly.
She ended her pre-pandemic season with an opening loss at Doha and resumed in August with an opening round defeat in Prague. While there was a win at the Cincinnati Open and US Open respectively, her best showing in a while was her third round loss to Elina Svitolina at the French Open.
Facing up to a player in the kind of form Kontaveit is in will be a tough job given this has been her recent set of results but the big advantage for Alexandrova has been her showing indoors last year.
Featuring across different tiers and a wide variety of main draw and qualifying matches, the Russian won 20 and lost just four of the matches she played indoors last year, including a title win in Limoges, and a semifinal apiece at Budapest and Linz.
She might fancy a chance for an upset here.
Kontaveit v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip
Kontaveit is 8/15 to win this, and 5/4 to do that in straight sets. Expecting the Estonian to come up with another clean performance but could make a slow start.
