Dusan Lajovic v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

These two players have met only once before this, and it was in a first round of the Indian Wells Masters in 2017. Lajovic ran out a comfortable winner in straight sets.

Lajovic Makes Return To Indoors For First Time

After a promising European clay-court swing in which Dusan Lajovic reached the third round of the Italian Open and quarterfinal in Hamburg, he endured a torrid time on the Parisian dirt.

Lajovic was sent packing at the hands of Kevin Anderson in the second round of Roland Garros, a shocking result by his standards considering the frailties of South African on the surface and his recent injury woes.

It seems the Serbian world no.24 never really recovered from that five set defeat, and he elected to play at the Forte Village Sardinia Open where he was beaten by eventual champion Laslo Djere in the round of 16.

The 30-year-old had started the season in the most spectacular manner, joining forces with Novak Djokovic to lead Serbia to ATP Cup success. He carried that form to Melbourne where he reached the third round of Australian Open for the first time.

All that good work could be undone if Lajovic is not able to rediscover the winning habit at the concluding weeks of the tennis season. He is set to play in his first match on an indoor hard court since losing his opening round of the Paris Masters towards the end of 2019.

Tiafoe Won First Title in Two Years

Frances Tiafoe descended the tennis tour and for much of the 2020 season competed in a handful of Challenger tournaments. Bar a quarterfinal in Delray Beach and the Round of 16 at the US Open, the 22-year-old has not had a notable presence of the main tour.

It was only logical for Tiafoe to return to the Challenger tour and make his presence felt. In search for confidence and matches, the former world no.29 was all business a week ago in Emilia Romagna.

He exacted revenge on Lorenzo Musetti for his defeat in Forli, and then took out the likes of Federico Delbonis and Salvatore Caruso to win the Parma Challenger – his first title in two years.

Under the tutelage of former ATP player Wayne Ferreira, it seems Tiafoe has pushed the reset button in an effort to rediscover his best form that saw him break the world’s top-30 just 18 months ago.

There has been a slight improvement in his ranking in recent months, now sitting at no.61 in the world almost 20 spots ahead from his ranking at the start of 2020.

Lajovic v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

We shouldn’t read too much in Tiafoe’s recent loss in Sardinia after expending all his energy to win the Parma Challenger. The American has found his groove and is playing much better tennis than what his ranking suggests. Expect him to squeeze past Lajovic who is not having the best of times.

Tip: Tiafoe to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
