Karolina Pliskova v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head

Two previous meetings between Pliskova and Kudermetova have been shared. On the clay court of Stuttgart, Pliskova had defeated Kudermetova in straight sets last year while Kudermetova made it 1-1 earlier in August this season at the Cincinnati Open round two.

Pliskova Losing Ground on the Top

Having begun the season ranked second in the world, Pliskova has been slowly – very slowly in fact – slipping down the pecking order. She has had her chances to even capture the top spot but without a Grand Slam win and with some of the younger players easily usurping her for WTA titles, things have begun to get concerning for the Czech world number six.

Since returning to the sport following the pandemic break, Pliskova has had one solid showing which came in the Italian Open. She reached the final there but up against a stunning Halep, she limped away to a 6-0, 2-1 defeat – retiring from the match due to a left thigh injury.

In the three tournaments other than that, Pliskova’s results have read as follows: an opening loss at the Western & Southern Open (to Kudermetova), a second round defeat at the US Open and another second round ouster from the French Open.

With not too many tournaments left on the WTA side of the things, Pliskova would hope to take away a decent performance from this competition, heading into the break. A first round bye might not have helped her too much either given the break in playing on non-clay competitions, and the fact only two of her 16 WTA titles have come indoors.

Can she avenge her Cincinnati loss to Kudermetova?

Kudermetova Outguns Vekic in Opener

Both Kudermetova and her opponent Donna Vekic had come into their first round match hunting for some form but in the end it was the Russian who came through easily.

The qualifier, ranked 47th in the world, had earlier defeated Stefanie Voegele and Arantxa Rus to make the main draw and then stunned the former world number 19 in straight sets to make it to the second round. Kudermetova won 6-2, 6-4.

She was off to a quick start, taking a 4-1 lead in the first set after cracking the Vekic service code on two separate occasions before carving out the set. In the second set, Vekic looked more settled on her serve but when she was broken in the fifth game, it looked like Kudermetova would run away with the encounter.

Instead, Vekic broke back to love to level it 4-4, before Kudermetova did the same to her opponent to get herself a chance to serve out for the match. The Russian then fell behind 0-40 but won the next five points to clinch the set and the match.

This follows Kudermetova’s second round appearance at the last indoors tournament she had played – in St. Petersburg – before losing to the second seed there. Can she prevent the second seed here from repeating that dose?

Pliskova v Kudermetova Prediction and Tip

This might not be as straightforward for Pliskova as the rankings might seem to imply. She starts at 2/5 to win it but expecting a match lot closer than that.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 8/11 (bet365)
