This will be the first ever encounter between Mertens and Muchova.

Mertens Makes No Mistake against Anisimova

If Amanda Anisimova thought she had any chance against Mertens, she was sadly mistaken. Mertens barely made any mistakes in her straight-set win over her American opponent to make it to the second round.

The Dutchwoman broke Anisimova twice in both sets, winning the match 6-3, 6-2 to seal another victory this season, following on from a top few performances since the return of tennis in August. Mertens needed only an hour and 12 minutes on the court and saw her go past her opponent thanks to a better showing on serve.

She won 66% of her service points as compared to Anisimova’s mere 50%.

The win follows Mertens’ excellent runs across four of the six tournaments she has played since the return of tennis after the pandemic break. After an early loss in Palermo, Mertens made it to the final at Prague, and a semifinal at the Cincinnati Open.

She was also a losing quarterfinalist at the US Open, going down to the eventual finalist Victoria Azarenka. Having won a title in each of the previous three seasons, this looks to be a very good chance for Mertens to go the distance but she would need to first get past an opponent not too behind her.

Muchova Lives up to Billing in First Round

Despite an opening round exit at the French Open, Muchova had entered her first round match against Shuai Zhang as an overwhelming favourite. And she lived up to that favourite tag.

Needing less than an hour in her opening round match, Muchova broke Zhang a whopping five times without reply and completed a 6-1, 6-1 victory. This was her first indoor hard court match of the season, following a couple of semifinals last year.

The first came at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow where she overcame three top opponents to make it to the last-four stage where she lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. And then at the WTA Elite Trophy, she joined in late, won a couple of matches to make it to the semifinal before Aryna Sabalenka ended her campaign.

This year hasn’t gone as well as Muchova would have liked, but she does have a fourth round appearance at the US Open to take confidence from.

Mertens v Muchova Prediction and Tip

Mertens is a very strong favourite to win this one and unless something goes drastically wrong, it’s her match to lose despite very little between the two players in terms of rankings.

Tip: Mertens to win: 8/15 (bet365)
