Maria Sakkari v Ons Jabeur Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between Sakkari and Jabeur and they are tied at 1-1. However, not much inference can be drawn from that since those came way back in 2015-16, on clay and at the ITF and Fed Cup level. This could be the start of a new chapter in their rivalry.

Sakkari Shock for Svitolina

In one of the upsets of the tournament, Sakkari registered a resounding win over the world number five Elina Svitolina, winning 6-3, 6-3. This followed her first round win over Kristyna Pliskova, also by the same scoreline.

Sakkari was quickly off the blocks against Svitolina when she broke her in the very first game and then consolidated the break by doubling that advantage and taking a 3-0 lead. While Svitolina got one break back in the fourth game, she was left to serve to stay in the set at 3-5 and was broken for the third time in the match.

The second set began by Svitolina getting the first break of serve but dropped that advantage in the very next game. And then serving at 3-4, Sakkari broke her again before serving out for the match.

With this win, Sakkari is now 5-1 on indoor hard courts this year, having earlier reached the semifinal at the St. Petersburg Open. Can she make it two in a row on this surface?

Jabeur Wins the Battle of Breaks

In a second round match which was filled with multiple breaks of serves, Jabeur was able to hold her nerve against Jelena Ostapenko to win in straight sets.

Jabeur was up a break as earlier as in the second game and this was followed by another exchange of breaks which took it to 3-3. The Tunisian held on to love to take a 5-4 lead and then broke her opponent to 15 to scoop the first set in the process.

The second set saw a whopping six successive breaks of serve starting Ostapenko drawing first blood in the third game. However, when Jabeur broke the Latvian in the eighth game and then held on to her serve it was back to the scenario from the first set where Ostapenko had to serve to stay in the match.

Ostapenko dropped serve and Jabeur took home the encounter 6-4, 6-4 and book herself another quarterfinal place.

Earlier Jabeur had wasted no time in getting past Barbora Strycova in the first round of the tournament.

Sakkari v Jabeur Prediction and Tip

There isn’t much to choose between the two players but surprisingly it’s Jabeur who starts off as a mild favourite – she is 4/5 to win this. We think Sakkari has the game to outdo her opponent here, especially if she can serve as well as she did in the previous round.

Tip: Sakkari to win: 1/1 (bet365)
