Jiri Vesely v Egor Gerasimov Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between Vesely and Gerasimov with both having won one. The first came at the Dubai Open qualifiers last year which Gerasimov clinched in straight sets before they met at the Pune Open in 2020. Vesely won his second ATP title by winning that match, beating Gerasimov in three tight sets.

Vesely Surprises Sandgren

In what turned out to be a relatively easy opener for Vesely, he defeated Tennys Sandgren 6-4, 7-6 to make it to the second round of this competition. He had gone in as the second favourite, with bookmakers offering 4/3 for his win and controlled the entire match on his serve.

Vesely needed just one break of serve in the encounter, which came in the seventh game to come through in straight sets. He faced a few break-points of his own but almost invariably always came up with a solid serve to ensure he retained the upper hand.

In the second tie-breaker, Vesely was down 2-4 at one stage before turning that around to get himself a match-point at 6-5. He missed that, overturned a set-point before clinching the tie-breaker 9-7.

While clay is an obvious favourite surface for Vesely, both his ATP titles including the Pune Open earlier this year, have come on hard court surfaces. Indoors, he had played just one tournament before this in 2020, at the Pau Challenger, and made it to the semifinal.

He now faces an opponent 18 places below him in the ranking.

Gerasimov Wins a Thriller

For the second successive match, Gerasimov was involved in a three-setter which ended in a tie-breaker. His previous meeting, at the second round of the Cologne Open, came against Felix Auger-Aliassime and while he lost that, it would have given Gerasimov a lot of confidence having pushed a top-notch player.

He had come into this opening round match against Lloyd Harris as a favourite though and when he ran off with a solitary break of serve in the first set to take a 1-0 lead, the encounter looked to be his for the taking. Even more so when he broke Harris in the opening game of the second.

Harris fought back to level things off and then broke Gerasimov again to pouch the second set 6-4 and push it into the decider.

The two players exchanged breaks of serve in the very first game, but then held on to their own over the next 10 games to push it into a tie-breaker which didn’t last too long as Gerasimov clinched it 7-3.

Can he sustain that level after having played a two-hour long encounter?

Vesely v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip

While a tough first round win might be a factor, Gerasimov looks to be the more confident of the two players and starts off as our favourite to clinch this.

Tip: Gerasimov to win: 4/6 (bet365)
