Andreas Seppi v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

There has been just one previous encounter between the 103rd-ranked Seppi and world number 209 McDonald. McDonald had won that 2018 Hertogenbosch Open match in straight sets.

Seppi’s Streak Comes to an End. Thankfully.

Since winning his second round match at the Forli Challenger in late September, Seppi had played five matches and lost all five, coming into this tournament. Which is why, when Seppi finally managed to put it across Aslan Karatsev in the first round here at the Nur-Sultan Open, it would have come as a huge relief for the Italian.

Interestingly, despite the former world number 18 having fallen to outside the top 100, Seppi has had one solid showing this year already and that came on the indoor hard courts of the New York Open.

Seppi, who has three ATP titles to his name, but none since 2012, came close to adding to that list when he reached the final in New York before losing to Kyle Edmund.

Unfortunately for Seppi, it’s not been the same again since, as he resumed the post-pandemic season with first round exits at the Cincinnati Open and US Open. Other than a few qualifying and Challenger match wins, he hadn’t won a single main draw match either, before finally breaking his duck here.

Can he double his wins in one stroke?

McDonald Munches on Bublik

While the American has had his form concerns, McDonald’s recent results suggest there’s some hope of overturning his fall in the rankings. The 209th-ranked McDonald featured in the Istanbul Challenger recently as a qualifier and made it to the quarterfinal before going down to Martin Klizan.

He then sent out Alexander Bublik in the first round here, a shock result given how easily McDonald managed to do it – winning 6-3, 6-2.

At the French Open, playing on a surface he doesn’t like too much, McDonald had started off at 9/5 in his opener and proceeded to win that before Rafael Nadal got the better of him.

Other than these two results, however, it’s been an underwhelming season for McDonald. Where he has typically struggled is at the latter stages of ATP tournaments, not proceeding to too much beyond the second round over the past few months. In Seppi, however, he has an opponent whom he can get past if he can raise his game enough.

Seppi v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Despite the huge parity in their rankings – almost a 100 places – the lack of form for either makes it a difficult call to make. A better option would be to go with the games market or the total sets market.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
