Grigor Dimitrov v Daniel Evans Head to Head

This will be their fifth meeting with Dimitrov leading Evans 3-1 on head to head. Dimitrov has beaten Evans at the 2011 Eastbourne, 2019 Chengdu Open and 2020 ATP Cup while the Briton’s only win came at the 2016 Washington Open.

Dimitrov Stuns Stefanos

When Dimitrov fell apart in the first set tie-breaker in his second round match against Stefanos Tsitsipas after having taken a 5-0 lead, the writing seemed to be on the wall. You don’t go from 5-0 up to lose the tie-breaker 5-7 against a player of the calibre of Tsitsipas and still expect to make a comeback to win the match in three.

That is exactly how the encounter panned out though as the Bulgarian clawed his way from the heart-break of that opening tie-breaker, to break Tsitsipas thrice over the next two sets. Dimitrov, who had overcome Karen Khachanov in the first round, registered a 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over the world number five.

This results follows a set of solid performances from Dimitrov in recent times, but none which have been as impacting as this one. In fact as recently as the French Open, Dimitrov had faced Tsitsipas in the fourth round and lost in straight sets.

Even in Rome before that, Dimitrov went down to Denis Shapovalov while Alex de Minaur had beaten him in the semifinal of the Antwerp Open last week. This win, as a result, would go a long way in rebuilding Dimitrov’s confidence, one that had taken a huge knock over the last couple of seasons thanks to a string of underwhelming results.

Evans Earns Another Quarterfinal

Evans had made it to the semifinal at the Antwerp Open last week and now has a chance to make it to the last four stage of back to back tournaments. The difference isn’t too stark, in that he had defeated the world number 18 Karen Khachanov in that one and now needs a win against the 20th-ranked Dimitrov in this one.

The Brit number one reached his third quarterfinal at an ATP 500 event this season, needing to fight back from a break down in each of the two sets to overcome Austrian wildcard entrant Jurij Rodionov in the second round.

Rodionov got off to a quick start, breaking Evans in the very first game, but the Brit levelled it at 2-2 following a long fourth game. Serving to stay in the set at 5-6, Rodionov was broken again allowing Evans to take a set lead.

In the second, matters came to a head in the fifth game when Rodionov got the early advantage again with a break of serve. Evans, however, broke back immediately and then broke the Austrian for the second time to grab the set and the match in an hour and 42 minutes.

There will be a sudden upping of the ante going into this quarterfinal but solid showing over the last couple of weeks should have Evans prepared for this one.

Dimitrov v Evans Prediction and Tip

Dimitrov will be bouyed by his victory over Tsitsipas but would know this is a new day and a new match and against an opponent who has not had too many issues to get going so far. Expecting another three-setter here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
