Karen Khachanov v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Khachanov and Fokina, who is 44 places behind the Russian in the ATP rankings chart.

Khachanov Coming Off Early Vienna Exit

It was exactly two years ago, Karen Khachanov shot to fame with a performance to remember at this very tournament. Playing in just his second full season of Masters tournament appearances, Khachanov shocked the likes of John Isner, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic en route winning the title at the Paris Masters.

And while he has never been able to replicate that success again – he is yet to win any ATP title since – Khachanov has done enough to keep himself in the top 20 on the rankings charts.

Unfortunately for Khachanov, his performances on indoor hard court surfaces have left a lot to desire since 2018. Last year, he was 3-6 on win-loss on these surfaces and in 2020 Khachanov has struggled equally to enter this tournament on 4-6. This includes a first round exit last week at the Vienna Open, which, to be honest came against a slight favourite Grigor Dimitrov.

Before that, Khachanov had made the quarterfinal at the St. Petersburg Open and after a first round bye, won his second round match against Zizou Bergs at Antwerp. He went down fighting to Dan Evans in the quarterfinals.

Can Khachanov now start off with a win here in Paris and try and go deeper into the tournament given his section of the draw has only clay-court specialist Diego Schwartzman and rather out-of-form Danill Medvedev as the players ranked higher than him.

Davidovich Fokina Inching His Way Up

Davidovich Fokina was nearly 250th in the world last year but has made some sterling progress over the past 18 or so months. He enters this tournament as the world number 62 on the back of some brilliant performances this year.

Followin the pandemic break, Davidovich Fokina made it to the fourth round at the US Open, beating his previous best of the second round in a Grand Slam. After a couple of lacklustre showings on clay, Davidovich Fokina looked to be at his best yet again when he pipped the likes of Marin Cilic and Dennis Novak to make it to the semifinal in Cologne where he went down to Alexander Zverev.

In the following week, featuring in the second tournament in Cologne in a row, Davidovich Fokina was a losing quarterfinalist this time but not before he had nearly caused a flutter – taking a set off Diego Schwartzman before losing the second in a tie-breaker and crashing out soon after.

While he faces a previous winner, the Spaniard’s form should give him the confidence to push his 18th-ranked opponent.

Khachanov v Davidovich Fokina Prediction and Tip

Khachanov is 1/3 to win this but we reckon Davidovich Fokina has the form to scalp a set off his opponent at the very least.

Tip: Davidovich Fokina to win a set – Yes: 4/6 (bet365)
