Giorgi on a Three Match Losing Streak

Having reached the semifinal of the Palermo Open, a tournament which was the first ever to be played following the pandemic break, Giorgi’s form has fallen away since then. In the four competitions she has played since then, the Italian world number 75 has won just two matches – in Prague and at the US Open – while losing four.

To be fair to Giorgi though, three of her defeats have come at the hands of opponents of a higher pedigree, opponents who have been ranked much higher than her. At the Prague Open, she lost to Elise Mertens, before going down in straight sets to Naomi Osaka, the eventual winner at the US Open.

Dayana Yatremska needed three sets to get past Giorgi in the opening round at the Rome Open while an elbow injury put paid to her chances at the French Open where she lost her opener to Martina Trevisan.

After taking a break of nearly a month and a half because of that injury – and the lack of women’s tournaments obviously – Giorgi is back but will rustiness prove to be a factor?

Sorribes Tormo on a Roll

A French Open first round loss shouldn’t take away from the fact the Spaniard Sorribes Tormo is showing some solid form in recent times and has reached nearly her best WTA ranking.

In the latest competition she featured in, Sorribes Tormo went into the Ostrava Open qualifiers, before defeating Magda Linette and Anett Kontaveit to make it to the quarterfinals. There, she looked to be on course to springing the biggest upset of the tournament when she scooped up the first set 6-0 against Aryna Sabalenka but the fizzled out in the second and third to lose 6-0, 4-6, 0-6.

Earlier, Sorribes Tormo had won the ITF competition in Cagnes-Sur-Mer, having also made the quarterfinal of the Prague Open.

Sorribes Tormo’s record on hard courts, however, hasn’t been the best and that’s where her overall form advantage could be blunted against Giorgi. Which is also why this could be a tough match to call.

Giorgi v Sorribes Tormo Prediction And Tip

Sorribes Tormo is rightfully the favourite, starting out at 4/6 to clinch this but we would put her only just above her opponent. Giorgi to push this into a third set.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
