Richard Gasquet  v Vasek Pospisil Head to Head

This will be the sixth match between both players with Pospisil leading the head-to-head 3-2. Their first four meetings were between 2013 and 2015 and split 2-2. They met again at Montpelier earlier this year, where Gasquet retired after Pospisil was up a set and a break.

Gasquet Looking At Best 2020 Performance

Once ranked number seven in the world and a regular member of the top 15 in the world, French veteran Richard Gasquet has had a couple seasons of injuries, poor form and disappointing losses. Ranked number 49th in the world, he had a good run at the ATP 250 in Montpellier back in February, but the return to the season has been far from satisfactory for the Frenchman.

A mix of good play and fortune has worked well for Gasquet thus far this week in Sofia as he ran into Roberto Baena Carballes of Spain who he dispatched in straight sets in the opener and then was potentially scheduled to play Marin Cilic, but a nightmarish 2020 for Cilic ended at the hands of number 339 from Czech Republic, Jonas Forejtek. Gasquet did well to breeze past Forejtek with minimal trouble to set up a quarter-final against Salvatore Caruso.

Caruso has had a good week with a convincing win against Felix Auger-Aliassime and from the beginning of the quarter-final encounter, it was evident that this match would not be easy for the Frenchman. A tight first set resulted in a tiebreak which was won by Gasquet and just when he looked like running away with the second set at 5-2, the Italian fought back and levelled at 5-5. The more seasoned Gasquet broke again and closed out the match 7-5 in the second.

2020 has not been a particularly good season for the Frenchman, but a good end here will raise his confidence heading Down Under for the start of the new season.

Title In Sight For Pospisil

Canadian Vasek Pospisil returned to the tour last year after a long injury related hiatus. Once ranked as high as number 25 in the ATP rankings in the middle of the last decade, it has been a difficult road back to the tour following back injuries and surgery.

After a good performance at the Davis Cup for Canada at the end of last season, Pospisil was a finalist at Montpelier in February, securing wins against David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov. He followed it up with a quarter-final appearance at Marseille, losing to eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, before the season took a break because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The return to the tour was positive with a fourth round US Open appearance but it has been a lackluster performance since and the Canadian will be happy to have hit form this week. With convinving wins against the likes of Jan-Lennard Struff and John Milman after a tricky opener against Ukranian Illya Marchenko, the big Canadian looks to be peaking at the right time and will have his eyes on a first ever singles title on the line.

Gasquet v Pospisil Prediction and Tip

Both players are eager to end the year with a title as they are on different career resurrection paths. Pospisil has been in better touch and his game is better suited to the indoor courts. Expect a well-fought straight sets win for Pospisil.

Tip: Pospisil to win in straight sets: 6/4 (bet365)
