Veronika Kudermetova v Bianca Turati Head to Head

There have been no previous matches played between the 46th-ranked Kudermetova and Turati, who is 318th in the world, at the highest level.

Kudermetova Crashes Kontaveit Hopes

Going into her opening round match with odds of 4/3 for her victory, Kudermetova came away in straight sets against the much-favoured Anett Kontaveit. What would have impressed her fans is the manner in which she turned an early break against her around to never lose her serve again in the match.

After dropping her serve in the very first game of the match, Kudermetova broke back in the second game following which the opening set went on serve despite both players having the opportunities to take the advantage.

It was in the 12th game, with Kontaveit serving to stay in the set, the Russian stormed ahead after getting a decisive break to 15.

Her confidence shot up and Kudermetova broke two more times in a row to kick-off the second set and very soon was 5-0 up. Kontaveit managed to hold on to her serve for once but it was a matter of too little too late by then as Kudermetova served out to love to grab the second round berth.

Kudermetova’s win comes on the back of a modest 2020 season returns, in which her top performance came at the Hobart International where she made the semifinal. That said, she did end it on bit of a high with back to back quarterfinal appearances indoors and now has a good chance to make it to the third round of a WTA 500 competition.

Qualifier Turati Shocks Shvedova

Ranked 318th in the world and with a career-best which is outside the top 300 anyway, Turati came through to the main draw with a couple of qualifying wins.

Turati wasn’t quite the favourite going into her opener against Yaroslava Shvedova, who was herself making bit of a comeback to the tour but had enough firepower to crush the Kazakh opponent 6-1, 6-2.

This, for a player who played in all of one match on a hard court surface all of 2020, was excellent going – especially for someone playing in her maiden main draw match at the WTA level.

While she might have been lucky in having drawn an opponent who hasn’t played too much over the last couple of seasons, that performance would stand her in a good stead for her second round match. The question though is if she will be able to test an opponent ranked about 270 places ahead of her.

Kudermetova v Turati Prediction and Tip

Kudermetova looked in ravenous form, almost like she wants to make it count and that could translate into another straight-set win against Turati as well. The Russian is 1/14 to win this and 2/7 to do that in straight sets and we are leaning towards the latter.

Tip: Kudermetova to win in straight sets: 2/7 (bet365)
