Paul Breezed Past Nam Ji-sung

In his second successive main draw appearance at the Delray Beach Open, Tommy Paul will attempt to show just much he has learned from last year’s second round defeat to Frances Tiafoe.

It will be another American languishing in his path after a fairly comprehensive opening round win over South Korea’s Nam Ji-sung.

The 23-year-old possesses one of the most ferocious forehands in the game and is up at a career-high ranking of World No.52, but he showed a marked improvement in his game against Ji-sung.

Unlike his forehand, Paul’s other aspects of the game are a work-in-progress. He demonstrated a much-improved backhand by playing some stunning passing shots against the South Korean and taking the ball ridiculously early at times inside the baseline.

Paul won nearly half of return points of both the first and second serves of his opponent –  a key feature that should put him in good stead against Sebastian Korda.

Korda Extends Winning Run From 2020

Sebastian Korda is quite possibly tennis’ in-form player as this brand new tennis season is underway. The 20-year-old who is regarded as one of the fastest rising American players and is certainly a star for the future.

Korda begun the 2021 season from where he left off, seeing off South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo 6-4, 6-4 to set-up an all-American clash against Paul.

He reeled off back-to-back service breaks to establish a commanding 4-0 lead in the first set. Despite Soon-woo fighting back, Korda held off the challenge with great strength -something he worked on with his Dad and entire coaching team during the short off-season. He also had the privilege of training under the watchful eyes of Andre Agassi .

The World No.119 broke serve decisively at the tail end of the second set to close out victory, and extends his winning run to six matches after ending 2020 on a high note.

Korda won the Eckental Challenger last November – his first-ever title on the professional circuit.

Paul v Korda Prediction and Tip

This is such a tough match to call as both these two players have bags of talent. Paul, the Delray Beach native, is on the cusp of breaking the Top 50 after years of grinding it out on both senior and Challenger tours. Korda seems to follow in the footsteps of his countryman, but we expect Paul’s repertoire of shots especially on the forehand wing to dominate proceedings.

Tip: Paul to win: 8/13 (bet365)
