Marta Kostyuk v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the final round of the 2019 Wimbledon qualifying and the 66th-ranked Tormo Sorribes won that in two tight sets to enter the main draw. For those wondering, Tormo Sorribes lost in that opener there.

Kostyuk Zooms Past Zidansek

All of 18 years of age and Kostyuk proved yet again why she is such a player to watch out for in the future. In her third round match against Slovenian Zindansek, she dropped just two games, to advance to only her second quarterfinal at a WTA event.

The first time had come on the clay court surfaces of Strasbourg, and she has now added one on hard courts too and of a WTA 500 event which should earn her enough points to allow for a decent improvement in the rankings.

Kostyuk’s 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of Zidansek came on the back of wins over Lucie Hradecka and Su-wei Hsieh in the first two rounds of this competition.

She needed 53 minutes on court, and broke her opponent a total of five times across the two sets, not getting broken even once in return.

And with her quarter of the draw opened up with the early ouster of Karolina Pliskova, it gives the Ukrainian a good chance to enter her first ever WTA semifinal. For that she will need to overcome an opponent ranked 33 places above her on the WTA charts.

Sorribes Tormo Advances to Best Ranking

Sorribes Tormo was 66th in the world prior to the start of this competition in Abu Dhabi and by advancing to the quarterfinal she has already made it to a ranking of 62nd, two places ahead of her previous career-best.

And she has done that by registering wins over Nadia Podoroska, Bernarda Pera and in her latest outing, over Anastasia Gasanova. Sorribes Tormo won 7-5, 6-3 in just over two hours to make the last eight of the tournament.

The Spaniard was off the blocks quickly in the first set when she broke Gasanova in the second game, and after dropping her own serve in the next, she broke again to go 3-1 up. Gasanova levelled things out soon and soon had a break-point to take a 5-4 lead only to be thwarted by Sorribes Tormo who broke in the 12th game to pouch the set.

The world number 66 then fell a break behind in the very first game of the second set too, levelled it at 2-2, and then again had to break Gasanova to make it 3-3. That was the last time Sorribes Tormo allowed her opponent to win a game as she won three games in a row to wrap up the match.

Kostyuk v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

Bookmakers have the youngster Kostyuk starting out as a favourite, offering 8/15 for her win but Sorribes Tormo should have more of a say in the encounter we believe. The Spaniard to win a set here.

Tip: Sorribes Tormo to win a set: 4/7 (bet365)
