Alize Cornet v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

There have been two previous matches played between Cornet and Tomljanovic before this and both players have won one each. The first came in 2013, at the US Open where Cornet triumphed in straight sets before Tomljanovic followed it up with a head-to-head-levelling performance at the 2019 Indian Wells Open in two as well.

Cornet Coming off Second Round Loss

Having won the last of her six WTA titles in 2018, Cornet’s form looks to have gone off the boil even if one counts her 13-9 win-loss record last season.

At best, it was a modest year for someone who has been ranked number 11 in the world at one point but add the fact she made it to the fourth round of the US Open – admittedly her best showing at the Flushing Meadows – and you are looking at a less than ordinary rest of the season.

Hard court surfaces haven’t quite been Cornet’s most favourite either with four of her six titles having come on clay. In more recent times she has begun to notch up important wins on hard courts too, having reached five finals on that kind of a surface between 2014 and 2017 but can she recreate that kind of form in 2021?

Cornet is coming off a straight-set defeat at the hands of Paula Badosa in the second round of the Abu Dhabi Open earlier this month, having beaten the 267th-ranked Valentini Grammatikopoulou in the opener.

Tomljanovic Struggled Through 2020

It wasn’t the best season for Australia’s Tomljanovic who fell to 13 defeats from her 18 matches, only winning a round in five of the tournaments she played in.

More vitally, when she won her first round encounter at the Abu Dhabi Open earlier this month against Lin Zhu, it was her first main draw victory in any WTA competition since she had beaten fellow Aussie Priscilla Hon in the opening round of the WTA Doha.

Following that victory, a loss in the second round to Garbine Muguruza followed but little would she have known it would be her last victory for a period of almost 11 months.

Because once tennis returned from its pandemic break in August, Tomljanovic lost in the first round at Lexington, Cincinnati Open, US Open, WTA Rome, WTA Strasbourg and the French Open to end an abysmal season.

Can she turn things around here?

Cornet v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Cornet and Tomljanovic are both 5/6 to win this but given all that happened over the past 12 months, Cornet could hold bit of an edge here.

Tip: Cornet to win: 5/6 (bet365)
