Milos Raonic v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

The head-to-head between the pair is currently tied at 1-1. Raonic won their first meeting on the hard courts of Cincinnati in 2018 before Lajovic restored parity with a three-set victory at last year’s Rome Masters.

Raonic Returns After Delray Withdrawal

Considering the gargantuan task at the hands of Denis Shapovalov, it seems Canada will put their eggs in a different basket to hatch. The opening match of the ATP Cup will be their best chance of inflicting Serbia’s first defeat and potentially win their tie as Milos Raonic faces Dusan Lajovic.

Raonic has beaten Tuesday’s opponent before and in straightforward fashion at the Cincinnati Masters three seasons ago. His explosive power off the ground and weight of shot on the fast and slick surface of the Melbourne court should wary the Serbian entourage and will certainly make things interesting in what has been labelled as the ‘group of death’ by tennis fans and pundits.

The big serving Canadian elected to withdrew at the recently-concluded Delray Beach Open, citing personal reasons. He was supposed to be the top seed and the favorite to walk away with the title in Florida’s southeast coast.

He will mark his return on court at the ATP Cup on the back of a very excellent 2020 in which he made the quarterfinals or better in six of the ten tournaments he played.

Lajovic Determined To Play Serbia’s Secret Weapon

Much of Serbia’s good work was done by Novak Djokovic at last year’s edition of the ATP Cup. However, Dusan Lajovic’s artistry cannot be discredited. He was instrumental in garnering victories against the likes of Karen Khachanov and Felix Auger-Aliassime which put them in the ascendancy in every tie.

And Serbia can count on Lajovic to play a similar role – a secret weapon which they can unleash at their opponents when they least expect it.

The bad news for Team Serbia is that the 30-year-old one-hander has only won one match on hard courts outside Australia during the course of 2020 season, and he is currently on a five-match losing streak after a poor run of form towards the end of last season.

Lajovic will be determined to turn things around and in earnest as he is set to play Raonic, a player he beat in last year’s meeting at the Italian Open.

Can he get Serbia’s title defense up and running?

Raonic v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

Lajovic showed at last year’s edition he thrives playing the underdog role. This is Canada’s best chance of posting a W on the board. Raonic is a massive favorite at 1/4 and I fully expect him to do the business for his country.

Tip: Raonic to win: 1/4 (bet365)
