Vondrousova Unlucky With Injuries and Setbacks

A case of double whammy is exactly what hit Marketa Vondrousova since reaching the French Open final in 2019. As a huge underdog in the championship match, she was largely outplayed by Ash Barty. But it was an occasion that happened so quickly like flashlight for the 21-year-old Czech left-hander.

Firstly, Vondrousova suffered a wrist injury which saw her call off the remainder of the 2019 season, shortly after making a second round exit at Wimbledon that year.

After convalescing for a few months, she took a while to get going last season. In fact it wasn’t until the Italian Open where she recorded her best result of the season, in reaching the semifinals.

Then, she contracted coronavirus last October, causing her to miss out of Ostrava – the tournament on home soil where she was amongst the favorites during the week. Once again there was  premature end to her season. Overall, she posted eight match wins during the course of the 2020 season, but she remains hopeful the bad days are finally behind her.

Gracheva Picks Up Win Over Cabrera

Varvara Gracheva came from behind to beat Australian wildcard Lizette Cabrera 2-6 6-4 6-2 to advance. It was  a match in which neither player looked comfortable in protecting their service delivery, with 15 breaks of serve.

Ultimately, it was the Russian, world no.95 who managed to stay solid and be decisive at the tail end of the match to pick up a rare tour-level match win.

Gracheva’s aggressive and risky all-or-nothing approach can generate equal share of winners and unforced errors. It is something she will need to eradicate quickly before facing the talented shot-making of Vondrousova.

The 20-year-old is synonymous for pulling off one of the most jaw-dropping comebacks in tennis at last year’s US Open. She trailed Kristina Mladenovic 1-6 2-5, 0-40 in their second round match in New York, before winning by a bizarre scoreline 1-6, 7-6, 6-0.

Vondrousova v Gracheva Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova’s first match of 2021 ended in defeat at hands of Hsieh Su-wei. But make no mistake and spin the narrative thinking it could turn into a crisis. Anyone can lose to Hsieh Su-wei who quite frankly has made career picking up upset wins. This should be Vondorusova’s turn to make amends and end Gracheva’s run.

Tip: Under 19.5 games: 5/6 (bet365)
