Iga Swiatek v Camila Giorgi Head to Head

Their only previous encounter was that second round match at the 2019 Australian Open and Giorgi had wasted no time getting past Swiatek, 6-2, 6-0. Things have changed considerably since then though.

Swiatek Romps Past Rus

In just 78 minutes, Swiatek snuffed out the Arantxa Rus challenge in the first round with the Pole winning 6-1, 6-3 to move into the second round of the competition.

Swiatek, who had made it as far as the fourth round last year here in Melbourne, began aggressively as she held twice and broke her opponent immediately to take a 3-0 lead in the first set. Rus finally got on the board in the fourth game but that was all she won in the first set as Swiatek broke her yet again to wrap up the set.

Rus finally got some of her own back when she began the second set with a break of serve, going 2-0 up. Not that Swiatek was too bothered as she rattled off four games in a row including two breaks of serve to shatter whatever opponent had built up to kick things off. The Pole then missed two match-points on her opponent’s serve before converting the third to wrap up the match in double-quick time.

In the end, it was Swiatek’s solid serving (82% first serves in and 83% of the first serves won) that was the difference between the two players.

Giorgi Shatters Shvedova’s Hopes

Yaroslava Shvedova is making a comeback to the tour, having barely played any tennis the whole of the previous season. She had also entered the match on the back of back to back losses in the first rounds of both the tournaments she had played.

And if she was hoping for some mercy from Giorgi in their opening round match, she was getting none of it. The former top-30 player shrugged off the the loss of a break of serve early in the first set to level it at 3-3 and then broke Shvedova yet again before serving it out to win it 6-3.

The second set came even easier for Giorgi. She drew first blood in the third game, taking a 2-1 lead and then as Shvedova looked to serve to stay in the match, Giorgi got the better of her yet again to complete the victory.

Can she now put up a repeat second round showing of their previous meeting?

Swiatek v Giorgi Prediction and Tip

Swiatek is in the kind of zone you would expect her to continue doing well; she starts an odds on favourite and we can expect her to go through in straight sets again.

Tip: Swiatek to win in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
