Berrettini Maintains Momentum to Make Round Two

In what could have potentially become a banana peel of a fixture, Berrettini was stretched but still managed to come through in straight sets against Kevin Anderson.

The first round match lasted two hours and 25 minutes thanks to a rather longish opening set tie-breaker which Berrettini finally won 11-9 but even after that Anderson kept at it, pushing him to a 7-5 in the second set. It was only in the third that Berrettini managed to get some respite but even the nine games that were played lasted a good 40 minutes.

Berrettini had earlier led his Italian side to the final of the ATP Cup with three successive singles wins including one against Dominic Thiem in the very first match. In fact, that 6-2, 6-4 rout of Thiem would have given him immense confidence as he looks to make it to the third round of the Australian Open for the very first time in his career.

And also for his time ahead in this competition and the rest of the year given Thiem is the US Open champion and one of the favourites to win here.

Qualifier Machac Benefits from Withdrawal

199th-ranked Czech player Machac made it to the main draw with three successive straight-set wins during the qualifiers, and then benefitted from his first round opponent’s fitness troubles. Mario Vilella Martinez managed to win the opening set in a tie-breaker but once Machac got hold of the second to level things out, there was no going back.

Machac then bagelled his opponent in the third set and was leading 3-0 in the fourth before Martinez retired from the match.

Before this, the Czech had played at the Murray River Open and lost to James Duckworth despite going into that encounter as a favourite.

Last season, Machac had participated in a plethora of Challenger tournaments, winning one – and his fifth over – and making it to the final at the Bratislava Challenger as a qualifier. Rather interestingly, Machac typically plays on indoor hard courts or clay courts but before this season had played just eight matches on outdoor hard surfaces.

Can Machac now trouble his Italian opponent on a surface he hasn’t had too experience?

Berrettini v Machac Prediction and Tip

Berrettini will be 1/10 to win this encounter, and 8/13 to do that in straight sets. Expect that to happen, and for a slightly riskier punt, you could also look at the games handicap market with Berrettini -7.5 at 1/1.

Tip: Berrettini to win in straight sets: 8/13 (bet365)
