Yulia Putintseva v Alison van Uytvanck Head to Head

There have been two previous matches at the WTA circuit between these players and Putintseva has won both of them. The first came on the clay courts of Brussels in 2013 before the more recent one at Indian Wells in 2018.

In between these two, there was another match on the ITF tour which Putintseva also won easily, giving her a 3-0 lead.

Putintseva Pulls Away from Stephens

It might not have been the easiest of opening round matches, playing against a former Grand Slam winner and the seeded Putintseva seemed to be making heavy weather of it at one stage. However, in the end, the Kazakh, after two hours and 11 minutes made it through three sets to clinch her second round berth.

Putintseva won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, after being a set and a break down in the second.

In fact once Putintseva broke back in the second set, she won six games in a row to level the scoreline. The world number 28 fell a break behind in the third game of the final set as well only to break back twice. Another exchange of breaks followed before Putintseva served out the match.

This follows a solid showing in the Abu Dhabi Open from Putintseva, where she managed to make it to the third round before losing to Sofia Kenin. At the Grampians Trophy, she went down to Victoria Azarenka in the second following a couple of weeks of struggles with her hotel room but she has done well to now put all of that behind her and start away with a win.

Career-Best for van Uytvanck

She had never won a main draw match at the Australian Open before this. Which is why when van Uytvanck fell a set behind to Clara Burel in her opening round match on Tuesday, it looked very likely she wouldn’t be making it to the second round again.

However, in a match that lasted nearly two hours, van Uytvanck came back from a set and a break down in the second – like Putintseva – to win her first round encounter. She claimed it 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, in a match that saw 13 breaks of serve in all.

Where van Uytvanck would like to change things around is her unforced errors count which was a whopping 37 as compared to her 31 winners and she would love to interchange those figures against Putintseva.

Putintseva v van Uytvanck Prediction and Tip

Putintseva, the favourite, starts out at 2/5 to win this while a straight-set win for her is at 10/11. We are looking at a far more straightforward match for Putintseva than she endured in the first.

Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
