Caroline Garcia v Anastasija Sevastova Head to Head

It’s 1-1 on their head to head.

Garcia beat Sevastova in the Mallorca Open final in 2016. Sevastova got her revenge the next year in the same tournament, beating the Frenchwoman in the semis before going on to lift the title. Neither of those two meetings needed a deciding set.

Garcia Struggling With Consistency

Seven-time WTA winner Caroline Garcia has not had a great start to 2021, as she is 3-3 from three tournaments so far.

She began the year with wins over Arina Rodionova and Timea Babos in the first two rounds of the Gippsland Trophy before going down to eventual winner Elise Mertens in the Round of 16.

At the Australian Open, the 2017 French Open quarterfinalist defeated Slovenia’s Polona Hercog in the first round, but was dumped out in the next match by Naomi Osaka, who went on to claim her second Australian Open title.

Garcia entered the Phillip Island Trophy next but was handed a first round defeat by Japan’s Misaki Doi.

It’s been a while that the 27-year-old right-hander has been producing mixed results. The former World No. 7 went 11-11 last year, reaching the quarterfinal in Lyon and falling in the Round of 16 at the French Open. It was also the first time since 2015 that Garcia failed to win a title.

The Frenchwoman, who won her first title in Bogoto in 2014, won two titles in 2016, two in 2017 and one title each in 2018 and 2019. Her last success came on the grass courts of Nottingham two years ago.

Sevastova’s Dismal Form Continues

Facing Garcia in the first round will be former World No. 11 Anastasija Sevastova, who herself has been struggling with poor form.

The 30-year-old Latvian comes into the contest with a 1-4 record this year having featured in four tournaments.

Beginning the year in Abu Dhabi, Sevastova was knocked out of the first round by Spain’s Paula Badosa after a three-set contest. At the Yarra River Classic, she won her first-round match against American Madison Brengle but was overpowered by Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next.

The 2018 U.S. Open semifinalist struggled with form at the Australian Open as well, as she could win just four games in her first round defeat to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.

Her dismal run continued at the Phillip Island Trophy, where she squandered a one-set advantage to lose her first round match to Romania’s Ana Bogdan.

Sevastova, who won the last of her four WTA titles in Latvia in 2019, was in woeful touch last year as well, where she won just two of her 12 matches. One of those wins was, however, over Serena Williams at the Fed Cup.

Garcia v Sevastova Prediction and Tip

Both players will be desperate to win and get some form behind them. It should be a good contest, with Garcia holding the edge as she has produced better results over the last one year.

Tip: Garcia to win: 8/11 (bet365)
