Cilic Looking To Regain Form, Momentum and Confidence
Former world number three Marin Cilic was a regular member of the top eight of the ATP rankings for most of the last decade. Cilic was the winner of the 2014 US Open as well as a three-time grand slam finalist, being runner-up at the 2017 Wimbledon and 2018 Australian Open, to Roger Federer each time.
However, the last season and a half has seen a notable drop in form and fitness, with injury layoffs, early losses and disappointing form as the Croat is now ranked number 44th in the world. Taking breaks from the tour and returning refreshed has not worked to Cilic’s favor either. While the 2020 season after the pandemic hiatus was disappointing for Cilic, the 2021 season has not got off to the best of starts for him.
An early loss at the Melbourne ATP 250 was followed by a first round meeting against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, which also culminated in a first set loss for the Croat. Cilic is the number three seed here in Singapore and with a first round bye, will be looking to get some confidence back ahead of a long season ahead.

Tight Opening Win For Daniel
American born Japanese Taro Daniel has been on the tour for a few years now and despite being successful on the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures tours, he has not managed to meet similar success on the ATP main draw. Once ranked in the top 65 in the world, Daniel is now ranked number 112 in the word.
The last couple seasons have been underwhelming for the Japanese who won his first title on the Istanbul clay in 2018 and was looking to add to his title count and move up the rankings further. While the Australian leg this year was not friendly to Daniel who had opening losses, he looked in decent touch here in his Singapore opener, as he prevailed in three sets against India’s Ramkumar Ramanathan.
Although he is up against the likes of Cilic, the 27-year-old Daniel will be aware that his opponent is relatively low on confidence and will look to capitalize on the moment and move deeper in the tournament.
Cilic v Taro Prediction and Tip
Although Cilic has been on the decline, and the opening round loss to Dimitrov at the Australian Open did nothing to start the season any differently, one would still expect him to be a heavy favorite in this encounter. Daniel will test the Croat, but expect the former world number three to prevail in straight sets.
Tip: Cilic to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
