John Millman v Matthew Ebden Head to Head

This is a rivalry that had seen seven matches across the Challengers and Futures circuit between 2008 and 2015, with just one match coming at the highest level. That was a first round encounter at the Brisbane International, in which Ebden had overturned a set deficit to win the encounter.

Overall, across all the three circuits, it’s 5-2 in favour of Ebden.

Millman with an Underwhelming Start to the Season

Millman represented Australia in the ATP Cup, playing two singles matches and winning and losing one apiece. His win, however, came against a player ranked outside the top 400, Greek player Michail Pervolarakis while losing to Pablo Carreno-Busta in his other match.

The world number 39 then featured in the Australian Open, going into his opening round match against Corentin Moutet as 2/5 favourite to win it. He took a two sets to one lead as well but soon fell to a five-set defeat to his French opponent.

Last year, Millman had begun reasonably well with a third round appearance at the Australian Open and then took off again towards the end of the season with a final appearance at the Nur-Sultan competition. He had ended the season with a quarterfinal under his belt at Sofia and would have expected to do better than he has begun so far.

Which is why, coming into this second round match after an opening round bye, Millman would be desperate for a couple of wins before heading into the rest of the season.

Ebden Attempting to Stall Plummet

At the start of the 2019 season, Ebden was ranked 47th in the world and soon touched 45th. That, however, was to become his best ranking since, as slowly and steadily he went on a free-fall, ending the year ranked outside the top 200.

The pandemic along with some more poor results meant he was 317th by the time 2020 ended and entered this tournament in Adelaide ranked 319th in the world.

A first qualifying round defeat at the Australian Open meant he couldn’t participate in that tournament, but he did win his first main draw match of the season at the Great Ocean Road Open, overcome Federico Delbonis in his opener. Later he went down fighting to Thiago Monteiro.

Here in Singapore, Ebden was a straight-set winner against Yuki Bhambri, another player looking to make a comeback to the tour, but his real test will come now; playing a fellow Aussie ranked nearly 270 places ahead of him.

Millman v Ebden Prediction and Tip

No surprises that Millman is 2/7 to win this, and we think those are tempting odds for the kind of difference in the two players at the moment. Might not be too tough of a match for Millman this.

Tip: Millman to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
